Place basil leaves and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. Muddle the basil until the oils are released.

Add the gin and simple syrup, then fill the shaker with ice and shake well.

Double strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with the reserved basil leaf and serve immediately.
