Quench your thirst and soothe that dry throat of yours with a fresh and crisp Gin Basil Smash.

As far as I’m concerned, the summertime has arrived. Here in Los Angeles, the weather has been getting quite warm and my buddy’s pool is open for business. We even had a pretty gnarly heatwave last weekend, but now things have finally gone back to normal. But this is LaLa Land, so using the word normal to describe this town is really just a matter of opinion. Either way, the weather is gorgeous, and it has me excited for the months ahead.

Next week I’m going to a pre-release fan event at the TCL Chinese Theater to see the newest Mission: Impossible movie, so I’m very excited about that. I got lucky snagging those tickets, as they sold out pretty quickly. Being a senior in high school when the first film was released, I must admit that I am more than impressed with what Tom Cruise has achieved with the franchise. And the town is absolutely electric with anticipation for this entry coming out. I know I am.

And then at the end of the summer I fly back home and spend the last month lounging by the pool at my parents’ house, hanging with my nephews and making cocktails with my mom. And today’s drink, the Gin Basil Smash, is one that’s on the menu. We’ll be using fresh basil from my mother’s herb garden, which will provide each glass we enjoy some extra sweet, earthy and peppery notes.

As much as I look forward to all of these things and more this summer, I’m fine with them taking their time to happen. I’m in no rush, and perhaps those moments will linger too, instead of flying by.

What Is The Best Gin To Use In A Gin Basil Smash?

For this herby elixir, let’s choose a nice bottle of a crisp and balanced London Dry gin. For something that leans more into the juniper infusions, a Bombay Sapphire is a delicious choice, and strong too. For a more even sip, Tanqueray or Beefeater will do perfectly. And for a fresher experience, use the rose and cucumber charms found in a Hendrick’s gin.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?

Fill a rocks glass with ice and garnish your Smash with a fresh basil leaf on top.

DO YOU NEED TO GROW YOUR OWN BASIL?

No, but it wouldn’t hurt. And it could be a small potted plant on your windowsill, you don’t need a huge allotment or garden to grow it in. Fresh basil can also be purchased at your local farmer’s market or grocery store.

Other Smash Cocktails Worth Trying

What is a “Smash” exactly, and why are some mixed drinks called that name? Well, the short answer is that when you muddle whatever fruit or herbs you’re making your drinks with, you’re essentially smashing the juices and oils out into your beverage. This makes for a very fresh and robust tasting experience. If you liked the Gin Basil Smash, you might enjoy these other recipes we have here at Twist & Toast.
