Start with 1/2 ounce of grenadine directly into the bottom of the shot glass.

Very slowly pour the pineapple juice over the back of a bar spoon to create a distinct layer.

Even more slowly than before, pour the blue vodka or rum mixture over the back of the spoon to make the final layer.
