Sweet, tart and tastes just right, the Bacardí Cocktail is a simple summertime classic.

Right off the bat, you’ll look at this recipe and think to yourself that this is a Daiquiri, right? Not quite. In fact, as most of you know by now, you can literally change just one ingredient in so many cocktails to make them something else entirely. While the Daiquiri is a close relative, with both made up of white rum and lime juice, it is the use of grenadine instead of simple syrup that makes tonight’s drink something different.

Now in truth, the Daiquiri easily paved the way for the Bacardí Cocktail, with the former originally being made with Bacardí rum way back in 1898 in Daiquiri, Cuba, when American engineer Jennings Cox came up with the legendary mixture. Some years later, in 1913, the Oakland Tribune announced the arrival of a new cocktail from New York that included rum, lime juice and grenadine, and by 1914 it had gained the name of the “Bacardí Cocktail”.

While there are plenty of brands of rum to choose from out there, some stories dating back to the 1930s tell of Bacardí sending agents around to popular bars that sold the cocktail, to see if they really were using Bacardí in their Bacardí Cocktails…

What Is The Best Rum To Use In A Bacardí Cocktail?

So, is there really only one choice of white rum (Bacardí Silver) that you can use when making this drink for you and your friends? Well, I ran across an interesting tidbit when reading about the history of this drink: According to Wikipedia, on April 28th, 1936, the New York Supreme Court ruled that only Bacardí rum can be used in anything deeming to call itself a Bacardí Cocktail.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH IS USED?

A chilled coupe with a juicy lime wheel on the edge for garnish is the best way to enjoy this cocktail. Hold onto the stem to keep your drink from warming up too quickly.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU USE ANOTHER KIND OF RUM?

You saw the New York Supreme Court ruling. Use another rum at your own peril. But seriously, Bacardí Silver is reliable, cost-effective and excellent in any cocktail that needs it.

Bacardí Cocktail Variations

Born of the Daiquiri, tonight’s drink is simple, smooth and has the right amount of sting behind the sweetness. If you fell in love with this pinkish-red colored tipple, you can try to make any of these classic Daiquiri recipes into another version of today’s by using the grenadine where you need to. Cheers, and have fun!

  • Hemingway Daiquiri – The iconic author’s favorite cocktail can easily become yours.
  • Frozen Daiquiri – This summertime stalwart will keep your blender busy.
  • Banana Daiquiri – Keep the Monday blues at bay with this banana-flavored beverage.
  • Papa Doble – Hemingway loved the Daiquiri so much, they named his own twice.
