Blue curaçao and orange juice come together to make the green, vodka-based Drunk Leprechaun cocktail.

When the clock struck midnight, my blankets were tossed aside, and I—fully dressed—leapt from my warm and cozy bed. Sneaking out the front door of our large family’s tiny, but super-cute cabin, I stepped into a chilly, misty night. Above the village, the craggy cliffs that bore the ancient ruins of a Celtic castle towered over the land. Its crumbled towers were broken spikes that pierced the moonlit horizon. It was there I must travel.

Weeks back, I had saved the life of King Brian himself, monarch of all the leprechauns. Me grandad’s old wolfhound had gotten hold of His Majesty, tossing the little royal back and forth in his massive jaws like one of his sock monkeys. Clapped the air, I did, and the grumpy mutt dropped the tiny ruler and ran off to chase some rabbits instead. King Brian, ever grateful, granted me three wishes. I had already used two by the time this late night had come. After a pot of gold—worth a few billion, at least—and an Aston Martin V8 Volante, I figured my third and final wish could wait a little bit. A wee bit less than a month felt respectable.

After trudging up the mountain’s path and reaching the ruins, I saw him… King Brian, sitting and humming happily to himself. It appeared he might have dipped into a jug of punch or poitín before I arrived. Excited at the sight, I ended up quietly blurting out loud to myself without even thinking about it.

“I wish I were a drunk leprechaun.”

King Brian turned to me, immediately aware of my presence. He began cackling like mad, laughing so hard that tears ran down his face. The world began to fade and suddenly turned a weird shade of green. The temperature dropped sharply, and I realized that I was wet and icy cold, completely out of nowhere.

I was also shocked to discover that I had magically turned into a green libation, comprised of vodka, orange juice and blue curaçao, shaken and poured over ice in a tall and slender highball glass. As King Brian approached me in my new form, licking his lips, I couldn’t help but think of the old saying:

Be careful what you wish for.

What Is The Best Vodka To Use In A Drunk Leprechaun?

It’s time to choose a bottle of vodka for our Drunk Leprechaun cocktail. Wait… vodka? For an Irish sounding tipple?? One that appears to have been a creation to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day here in the United States??? Well, yeah. Irish folk like vodka too, it’s okay. I’m proof. There’s no law that says you can’t find a nice top-shelf brand, like Chopin or Belvedere, and shake up a nice, green and citrusy dram for yourself. Any real leprechaun would agree with me. Especially King Brian.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?

When you’re ready to pour, fill a highball glass with ice cubes, then garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry.

WHY VODKA AND NOT WHISKEY? DOESN’T SEEM VERY IRISH

Bad news, but nothing about this drink is Irish. Being an American creation, it more than likely is named the way it is because of the green color the mixture has.
