The dark, crimson and bubbly Gin de Cassis cocktail is a full-bodied and fruity thirst-quencher.

The job of a private investigator is a tough one. And dangerous. Late nights, mysterious characters, deadly situations… Thankfully, that’s not my profession. Whenever you run across one of my pieces here, and the story revolves around some noirish, Bogart-esque character and situation, it’s probably because I’ve got The Maltese Falcon or In A Lonely Place playing in the background. And while Los Angeles is my home, my adventures these days happen whilst on the couch. With a cocktail in hand.
Tonight’s recipe reminds me of mystery and intrigue. Why? Why not. Sometimes you’re inspired by feelings and flavors over facts. Don’t get me wrong, the truth is vital, and in short supply these days, depending on who you talk to. But I’m speaking of whimsy and wonder, those indescribable, nebulous pangs of imagination that instantly send us to far-off lands filled with possibility.
And the Gin de Cassis is the perfect tipple to sit and sip on while allowing all of this wonderful nonsense to fill your head. Fruity, tart and with a sweet fizzy finish, this full-bodied, sweet sipper can be the answer to all of life’s mysteries… if you’d like it to be.
What Is Crème de Cassis?
Crème de cassis is a dark and sweet liqueur made from blackcurrants. While originally a product of Burgundy, France, with the modern version being around since 1841, it has since been produced all over the world. A low-content alcohol, it is featured in many popular cocktails, and often served neat after a meal as a digestif.
What Is The Best Gin To Use In A Gin de Cassis Cocktail?
A solid and stalwart London Dry gin is an excellent choice when crafting this drink for yourself. The herbal infusions, like the juniper, will pair and meld beautifully with the crème de cassis and lemon juice. For a more fruit-forward flavor, a stone fruit-infused gin, like a Grand Cabaret from Hendrick’s, will give your cocktail a colorful sipping experience.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?
Fill a highball glass with fresh ice, pour your shaken drink in and garnish with some plump and juicy blackberries.
SHAKEN OR STIRRED?
Some gin drinks, like a Martini, are stirred. But for this recipe, shaking is the best method for thoroughly mixing and combining the crème, lemon juice and spirit together before topping with the club soda.
