The fruity and sweet Mango Daiquiri is the perfect way to beat the heat this summer.

Mango Daiquiri

The next time you’re sitting poolside, sweating in the glorious heat of the summer sun and sipping on an ice-cold and invigorating Daiquiri, consider how long that cocktail took to reach your lips. And I’m not talking about the length of time that was needed to prep and serve it to you, I’m thinking about history here. One of my favorite things about cocktails are the rich chronicles that come with just about every drink.

The Daiquiri itself has been around since at least 1896, with its origins being traced back to a recipe card from that time and attributed to a man named Jennings Cox. An American engineer working in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, Cox came up with the now classic recipe when he discovered he had run out of gin. Mixing limes, brown sugar and the local rum, the Yank’s concoction was named after the coastal Cuban village of Daiquirí. In 1909, Admiral Lucius W. Johnson brought it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington D.C., introducing the beverage to American shores.

Sometimes, the simplest things in life are the best, and the classic Daiquiri is no different. Famed author Ernest Hemingway was a well-known lover of the cocktail, and even had his own version named after him. With an endorsement like that, it’s no wonder this drink has passed the savage tests of time and trends. Many drinks come and go in regard to popularity, but the Daiquiri will always be there.

Like many iconic cocktails, all manner of versions and variations of the Daiquiri have been served a million times over around the world. The drink we’re looking at today is one of them, the Frozen Mango Daiquiri. Using the tropical stone fruit as its flavor base and rum as the primary spirit, this sweet and tangy tropical treat is destined to be the hit of your next summer soirée.

What is the Best Rum to Use in a Mango Daiquiri?

Our recipe calls for an aged rum to be used in the Mango Daiquiri. What exactly is aged rum? It can be any kind – dark, gold, etc. – and could have spent any amount of time in a barrel. They’ll have color too, so if you choose a silver or white rum, it’s probably not an aged spirit. When I made this cocktail at home, I opted for a Jamaican Navy strength rum. This was a much stronger, heavier spirit that had a lot of nose. Some have even described the smell as “pleasantly funky”, and it mixed up wonderfully with the other ingredients.

What glassware and garnish is best for a Mango Daiquiri?

Go for an extra-large martini or coupe glass when serving up this frozen treat. Garnish with a lime wheel and a cocktail cherry to complete the look. If your drink is too slushy to sip, use a straw. I like the crazy kind.

How do you make frozen mango cubes?

Take any sized mango, peel the skin and slice the fruit into square chunks. Cover and store in your freezer for at least 2 to 3 hours. You’ll want to keep them spaced out so they don’t stick together during the freezing process.

Mango Daiquiri Variations

Once you’ve relaxed with a few Mango Daiquiris on a hot day, your mind may begin to wander as your curiosity is piqued. What other kinds of Daiquiris are out there? How do you make them? Are they all frozen? Do I have all the stuff I need to whip them up? If thinking overwhelms you, have no fear. Twist & Toast has the answers you’re looking for with some of the most delicious and simple Daiquiri recipes around.

  • Classic Daiquiri – The original and simple icon that all other Daiquiris take their cues from.
  • Frozen Daiquiri – A summertime mainstay, the Frozen Daiquiri is what most people think of when this cocktail is mentioned.
  • Strawberry Daiquiri – Bright red and sumptuously sweet, the Strawberry Daiquiri is sure to quench your thirst.
  • Lava Flow – Somewhere between a Pina Colada and a Strawberry Daiquiri is the smooth and decadent Lava Flow.
