Tart and sweet, the Pineapple Upside Down Cake cocktail will keep any party going all night long.
It was the oddest of nights, because of the strangest of experiences.
I had become separated from my friends and lost amongst the mazes of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was late, the night was sultry, and for whatever reason nobody was answering their phones or responding to my texts. Usually, I’m able to keep my cool exterior, but at this point, I was starting to get anxious.
Down a sideways, cobblestoned street, I found myself completely alone. The hot and heavy air created a fine mist of moisture that resembled a dense fog. As I walked through it, my hair and clothes began to stick against my body, as if I had been swimming. Not only was I lost, but I was soaked as well. And I had just bought this fancy underwear, too. Knew I should’ve gone commando…
A strange lady walked up out of nowhere, asking me if I felt like dancing. Confused at first by her request, she quickly explained there was a party going on in a loft upstairs. She saw me through a window, thought I looked “cool and lonely” and came down to ask me to join her. How could I say no? How could anyone?
The party was unlike anything I had ever witnessed. My host immediately served a Pineapple Upside Down Cake cocktail, saying “upside down” was the gathering’s theme. I took a sip of my drink, marveling at its colored layers, going from yellow to orange then to a deep red at the bottom. It tasted exactly like its name, a pineapple upside-down cake.
Then my host did something that I still question as to whether or not it was real. She walked, with her drink, along the wall and up to the ceiling, where the rest of the party guests were dancing. And they were all drinking the same cocktail, with their glasses strategically held right side up, so nothing spilt. She looked down at me, smiling and yelling over the Lionel Richie music blasting from the stereo. “It’s the drink, take another sip!”
I took a long draught and felt a warmth surge through me. Against my better judgment, I tried walking up the wall… and did! It felt effortless, and gravity didn’t so much disappear as it bent to my whim. Soon I was on the ceiling too, doing Da Butt, the Alf and other dances I didn’t know that I knew. Unfortunately, however, I neglected to turn my glass the other way to adjust for this change in perspective. Everything in it spilled as I boogied. Without that cocktail to continue sipping on, my feet soon separated from the ceiling and my body fell fast toward the floor.
Fifteen minutes later, after I came to from bashing into the ground at top speed, I found myself back on the misty streets, searching once again for my friends. Searching and wondering how they were ever going to believe what had just happened.
