Treat yourself to a smooth and fruity libation with the delectable Strawberry Fizz cocktail.

Yesterday was quite the blustery and rain-soaked day here in Los Angeles. I’m not sure if what we experienced was another one of those “atmospheric rivers” we’ve been splashed with in recent years, but I can say that I was very happy to be indoors and in my pajamas. With some screenwriting jobs suddenly piling up, I found myself wrestling with the blank page yet again, all to one of my favorite sounds in the world, falling rain. And some John Barry soundtracks, too.

A little after 1:30 in the afternoon, just a tad past lunch, I started to feel that mischievous little devil plop down on my shoulder and start whispering in my ear about being thirsty. I’m sure you have a devil of your own, trying to convince you to take a break and make a cocktail or two for yourself. On a Monday. Hours before dinner. And you give in, because it is raining after all, and you have The Man With The Golden Gun playing in the background. Plus, no one is home to yell at you for day drinking. So, why not?

One of my favorite beverages to make—as well as drink—is the frothy and foamy Gin Fizz, and that’s exactly what my mood on a stormy day in the City of Angels seemed to call for. Except I was craving a little something extra, a sweeter, more candy-like flavor even. And then I remembered the recipe we’re looking at tonight, which is an offshoot of the classic: the Strawberry Gin Fizz. With the addition of hulled, halved and muddled strawberries, the tangy and effervescent tipple becomes a fruity and bright way to spend a dreary afternoon.

I just wish it rained in L.A. more often.

What is the best alcohol to use in a Strawberry Fizz?

The Strawberry Fizz is a variant of the Gin Fizz, so we’ll want a nice bottle of that particular spirit when mixing up today’s drink. I’ll often sing the praises of a stone fruit-infused Grand Cabaret from Hendrick’s, but for this recipe, that might be too robust and colorful, especially since we’ll be adding strawberries to the mix. A stalwart and reliable London Dry gin is the preferred way to go, as the herbaceous notes of juniper, licorice and citrus meld beautifully with the lemon juice and simple syrup, and assimilate nicely with the muddled fruit.

What glassware and garnish are used?

You can use a highball or collins glass for this cocktail, although sometimes I’ll use a rocks or Old Fashioned glass. Garnish the rim with a strawberry.

How do you “hull” a strawberry?

Simple, just take a sharpened and clean knife, then slice the green caps off of each strawberry. Congratulations, you’ve successfully hulled your berries!

Other fizz cocktails worth trying

All you need is some gin, citrus, sugar and a splash of club soda—along with that egg white froth—and you’re in Fizz Town, friend. And if you’re like me and can’t get enough of that silky and refreshing concoction, you’ll be excited to try out any and all of these Fizz variations below.

  • Sloe Gin Fizz – Some sloe gin makes this popular version of the Gin Fizz.
  • Rhubarb Fizz – A Fizz that’s sweet, fresh and unique.
  • Ramos Gin Fizz – A New Orleans Fizz that’s the favorite of many cocktail enthusiasts.
  • Cucumber Gin Fizz – Here’s a crisp Fizz that sparkles in more ways than one.
