Simple and refreshing, the Tequila and Sprite is an easy-to-make and satisfying weekend tipple.
Sometimes I am an actor. I’ve even popped up in a thing or two that you can actually stream or see on television. Pretty neat, huh? Make no mistake though, it is a long, hard road. From starting out as a fresh-faced teenager in a local PBS afterschool special, to getting cut out of an episode of The Mandalorian a few decades later… well, it hasn’t been boring.
One of my earlier gigs was in an independent film. I was right out of college and super excited to be one of the main characters in the movie. The other cast members have become lifelong friends, and my roommate from school ended up getting cast as well. It all felt kinda magical. Movie turned out okay, and didn’t really light the world on fire, but the experiences I had making it have become more important than material success over the years.
We had reshoots a few times, refining the story and streamlining the action. During this time you could tell the budget was a little tight. Earlier we had a nice catering setup, the type that made you say “Wow, this is a real movie!” If you wanted a can of Sprite, they were plentiful and always in a clean cooler filled with a constant supply of fresh ice. During the reshoots, there was a Styrofoam box with tepid water from melted ice and a few cans of something called Spryt. I’m not kidding. Tasted pretty good too, better than the Dr. Thunder.
So this memory got me curious… how many Sprite knockoffs are out there and what kooky names are they called by? A little internet search later and I ran across some names like Spring, Spruce Up (which sounds like an order), Spritz, Smile (which is nice), Strike, Sport Clear and Shport (for the Sean Connery fans). Weird little rabbit hole we just fell down, I know. But in case you find yourself somewhere and there is no Sprite available, or you need a cost-effective alternative for a party or low-budget movie, now you have some options in mind. Might not taste exactly the same, but the lemon-lime flavor and spikiness of the carbonation are still totally palatable.
What About the Tequila and Sprite Cocktail?
I was getting there, don’t worry. Tonight’s cocktail is a simple one. Tequila and Sprite, just like it’s called. I went on and on about the other lemon-lime flavored sodas earlier to give you a few options, just in case you want to change it up. Or you treated yourself to a really expensive tequila and you’re trying to save a little scratch on the soda.
What is the Best Tequila to Use in a Tequila and Sprite?
This is what we’ll refer to as “dealer’s choice”. And you’re the dealer. I myself enjoy silver tequila. The sweet, agave-forward notes can be a little peppery and creamy, making for a smooth, clear mixer that’ll meld seamlessly with your soft drink. A reposado style will bring some more spiciness and complexity, while an añejo tequila will be much more robust and darker due to the aging process.

Sure! Clear spirits like vodka and gin tend to work best, as they traditionally mix very nicely with citrus flavors. White rum is pretty good, too.
