With a spicy, bubbly bite, the Vodka and Ginger Ale is a bold and refreshing late-afternoon tipple.

It was winter in Bratislava, but I didn’t come prepared for a cold reception. My contact was none too friendly, and when I mentioned that I’d like to have a drink after my long and tiring flight, they mistakenly thought I was propositioning them. So I found myself alone, not knowing where I was, and worst of all, freezing my hinder off. It was time to find a drink, any drink, as long as it was an adult beverage.
The sun was beginning to set, and the snowy city was getting even colder as the minutes marched on. My contact was also my translator, and without them my words were absolute gibberish to the locals. Plus, my handle on their language was less than stellar. So I searched for any place that appeared to make cocktails.
Almost as if I had willed it into existence, the door of a warm and comfortable-looking tavern opened, and a friendly-looking face popped out, beckoning me to come inside. Heat poured out from within, making my decision an easy one. I stepped in and took a seat at the bar.
The happy, inviting face now stood before me, waiting for my order. I had a craving for a refreshing and tall mix of a spicy soda and biting spirit, so I requested a simple Vodka and Ginger Ale, hoping things wouldn’t get lost in translation. I was not disappointed.
A tall and fizzy tipple slid across the bar and stopped with pinpoint precision in front of me. The first sip was heaven-sent, the bubbles flying right up my nostrils, tickling my entire face. My muscles relaxed and the warmth of the vodka filled my body, defrosting me after a strange day.
It may have started off as a bit of a challenge, but this Vodka and Ginger Ale helped end the day in truly a pleasing way.
What Is The Best Vodka To Use In A Vodka and Ginger Ale?
You’ll want to let the ginger ale do most of the flavor work in this cocktail. Choose an unflavored and strong top-shelf vodka, one that will complement the spicy notes in the soda with a crisp and peppery bite. Belvedere and Chopin are my top choices, but if they’re a little too steep in price for you, give a bottle of California’s New Amsterdam a try.

- 1 lime wedge optional

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?
For this drink, you’ll want a highball or collins glass filled with ice and garnished with a plump, juicy lime wedge on top. A few straws will look fun, too.
CAN YOU USE DIET GINGER ALE IN THIS DRINK?
This is a matter of preference. I myself am not a fan of making cocktails with diet soft drinks, as the flavor tends to overpower the balance of the drink.
