Wind down after a long day with the robust and smooth Whisky Mac cocktail.

Today’s recipe is simple, strong and well-traveled.

The Whisky Mac is the name this tipple has, after the man its creation is supposedly credited to. The controversial figure of Colonel Hector MacDonald is said to have crafted the potent mixture of Scotch whisky and ginger wine back during the days of the British Raj. The Whisky MacDonald, as it was first called, eventually became known by the shorter moniker, Whisky Mac, over the years.

And while it was first born from the brain of a decorated soldier, the Whisky Mac soon found its home amongst the links of prestigious and manicured golf courses the world over. While most clubhouses offer an array of popular mixed drinks that players can enjoy after a long—and sometimes tough—day on the green, tonight’s mixture has proven to be very popular with players who work up quite the sweat while putting below par.

You don’t have to be a golf pro or a decorated soldier to enjoy a Whisky Mac or two this evening. All you need is some good Scotch, ginger wine and a fancy glass to fill.

What is the best whisky to use in a Whisky Mac?

A Whisky Mac uses a strong, smooth and robust Scotch spirit. Now, I’m not much of an expert when it comes to Scotch, but I have discovered that you get what you pay for. The finest drams I’ve sipped on have been a Macallan 12 and an 18. These instances are few and far between, as well as fairly expensive. Chivas Regal is a fine, cost-effective choice, as is Glenlivet.

What is ginger wine?

Popular in the U.K., ginger wine is a fortified mixture of ginger, raisins, sugar and yeast, and usually blended with brandy. Often sold as a green libation, featuring an emerald hue, ginger wine is most famous nowadays for being an ingredient in tonight’s cocktail.
