Beat the heat, quench your thirst and quell your ice cream cravings in one fell swoop with the Alcoholic Root Beer Float.

To say I’m excited to talk about tonight’s drink is a slight understatement. I’m a root beer nut, and knowing that I’ll get to make myself a few Alcoholic Root Beer Floats—for research purposes—has me giddy like the overgrown child that I am. I like what I like, and as Popeye famously said, I yam what I yam. And the bubbly and spicy-sweet delights of root beer has my mouth watering at this very moment. Not drooling, mind you. I still like to pretend that I’m refined.
I can go on and on about it, so I’ll only share a quick anecdote. Maybe two. Or I’ll mush a bunch together, I don’t know…
When I was in college, I’d come home for the summer and take my little brother to the mall. We’d play games at the arcade, get some lunch at the food court, then take in a movie. And the cuisine we’d gorge ourselves on would be a feast comprised of corn nuggets and root beer floats from the A&W. I can taste that honey mustard dip, slathered all over a golden and crispy little morsel, washed down with the creamy, smooth and slightly bubbly ice cream soda. Not a bad way to spend a hot afternoon, even if we almost walked out of Batman & Robin that one time with our sister.
We all thought it was a pretty awful movie, but I bet if we watched it now with a few rounds of Alcoholic Root Beer Floats, it’d be way more entertaining. That’s something worth trying this summer.
What Is The Best Vodka To Use In An Alcoholic Root Beer Float?
You can pick a plain, unflavored vodka and let the root beer and vanilla ice cream do all the talking, figuratively speaking. For something a little sweeter, pick a vanilla vodka, which will meld nicely with the similar notes already present. It all depends on your palate, as well as your sweet tooth.

Ingredients
- 4 ounces vanilla ice cream 1 scoop
- 2 ounces vodka
- 6 ounces root beer chilled
Instructions
- Place the vanilla ice cream into a large glass.

- Pour the vodka over the ice cream and slowly fill the glass with chilled root beer until it is nearly full, allowing the foam from the ice cream to rise.

- Give the float a gentle stir if desired and enjoy immediately.

WHAT IS THE BEST ROOT BEER TO USE IN THIS DRINK?
Mmmmmmm, root beer… I like to consider myself a connoisseur of sorts when it comes to this beverage. I can go on forever about it, so I’ll just suggest a few of my favorites. A&W is a classic, and I love it. IBC is another that makes me happy, as does Stewart’s and Not Your Father’s… with the latter containing a little something extra for grown-ups.
