Stay hydrated and refreshed with the thirst-quenching Agua De Pepino drink.

The bus had broken down some 23 miles back, along a road so rocky and uneven that even walking it proved a colossal feat. And in this jungle heat, south of the border, why, you could almost see the humid air in front of you, which made every step feel a million times heavier than it should. The trees were so close together and their canopies seemed to form a tunnel over the road that hardly any light could sneak in. Except for a bright shaft here and there.

I trudged on, drenched in sweat, hoping soon to stumble upon a hotel with a bed and a bath, or better yet, a cantina. My Panama hat felt as if it were glued to my head, and the linen shirt and pants I wore, while light, didn’t seem to be the best choice for tropical hiking. The muggy and oppressive heat around me seemed to press down even harder as I moved sluggishly onward.

Like a miracle, the trees and road gave way and opened up onto a cute little town. And right outside of it, a little kiosk with a sign that read “Agua De Pepino”, where a smiling pair of locals held out welcoming large cups of a light green and fresh-looking drink. I greedily sipped, happily paying more than what they were asking. The sweet and citrusy cucumber-flavored water was like manna from heaven, and almost seemed to cool off the air around me as I guzzled round after round of the invigorating beverage.

My travels could now continue, and with more of a pep in my step. I even filled a newly purchased canteen with the brilliant and thirst-quelling Agua De Pepino, to ensure my hydration on the rocky road of adventure ahead.

What is the best alcohol to use in the Agua De Pepino?

This is one of those fabulous concoctions that requires no alcohol, spirits, booze, hooch, giggle-juice or whatever you’d like to refer to any liquid that requires an ID and being over the age of 21 to purchase. Nay, tonight’s mixture is a refreshing blend of cucumbers, lime juice, water, and sugar that is quite good for you, especially on a hot and sweaty day.

What glassware and garnish are used?

Keep your finished mixture in an airtight and resealable container so you can store it in your fridge. When it’s chilled and you’re ready to serve, pour over ice into a tall glass or cup, and garnish with a juicy and plump lime wedge or two.

What does “water divided” mean in recipes?

Simply put, it means that you won’t be using the water required all at once. For example, we have 6 cups of water divided in this recipe, which means you’ll be using 3 cups at the top of preparing everything, then 3 cups later.
