Serve up some liquid dessert with the sweet and fruity Apple Pie drink.

It was a disaster of epic Thanksgiving proportions.

There was turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole, yams, more stuffing, mulligatawny for some reason, even more stuffing and of course, cranberry sauce, both fresh and from the can, because your uncle is persnickety. There was whipped cream, Cool Whip, wine and champagne, and plenty of spirits too for the souses in the family. Like your uncle. There was pumpkin pie, loganberry pie, cherry pie, butterscotch cream pie and… Wait a minute… Where’s the apple pie??

No apple pie on Thanksgiving, with everybody already in attendance and ready to plop some vanilla bean ice cream atop a heaping slice of hot, sloppy goodness, was near impossible to comprehend. Would your uncle throw a fit if he were presented with some rhubarb pie instead of his traditional dish? Not if he’s had enough to drink, and grandpa figured out the best way to facilitate that, while offering a sweet distraction to all the grown-ups as well… The Apple Pie cocktail.

Vodka, whiskey, and some unfiltered apple cider made for a strong and festive beverage, all shaken up, then served on the rocks. Your uncle loved it so much that he forgot to have any pie.

And he also forgot that it was he who neglected to pick up some apple pie in the first place.

What is the best alcohol to use in an Apple Pie Drink?

If your Apple Pie drink is coming out to visit with everyone during the holidays, you can opt for some of the higher-end and top-shelf selections of vanilla-infused vodka, such as Grey Goose La Vanille or Belvedere Heritage 176. Absolut Vanilia works well, and is a cost-effective and excellent choice that mixes up nicely in any drink it is used in. For the cinnamon-flavored whiskey, there are a few other options outside of the more well-known Fireball, including Catch Fire, Ole Smokey, Bird Dog Hot Cinnamon Whiskey and Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire. With the sweet and spiced flavors from the spirits mixing with the apple cider and heavy cream—for an à la mode experience—your festive season just got a whole lot more relaxing.

What glassware and garnish are used?

You can serve this cocktail straight up or on the rocks. If over ice, pour your drink into a rocks or Old Fashioned glass, or a pre-chilled and long-stemmed coupe if you opt to go the iceless route. Garnish the rim of either with a fresh apple slice and cinnamon stick or two popped in as well.

What is à la mode?

This is a French phrase that translates to “in the style of”, and when used in the context of a dessert, usually means that a scoop or two of ice cream is served alongside the main dish, like a slice of pie.
