Have a spicy and warming chocolate-filled treat with the Mexican Mocha.

There are all manner of hot beverages one can drink when the weather outside is frightful. Be it blustery snow or a blizzard, perhaps. Maybe even icy sleet or freezing rain is keeping you indoors today and sitting by the fire. It could even be a calm evening, with the slightest hint of briskness in the air that inspired you to don your fuzziest sweater and think of a warm and relaxing drink.

Whatever the case may be, you’ve become a tad thirsty, but you have a craving for something sweet and rich as well. After a recent trip to the grocer, your cupboard is thankfully fully stocked and many options are before you. You stand there, for what seems like an hour, trying to decide what you’ll make for yourself. And if you thought this took a while, just wait until you try to pick out a book to read, or movie to watch. Decisions, decisions. And here you are, always indecisive.

But as the cold winds pick up outside, you remember tonight’s recipe upon seeing a few choice ingredients, the Mexican Mocha. Fresh coffee, cocoa powder and a pinch of cayenne and cinnamon, all topped with some fluffy, whipped cream, has struck you as the perfect concoction for a cold day. Like a spicy and subtly sweet coffee or hot chocolate, the Mexican Mocha is a heated and relaxing way to enjoy the best of both.

Now all you need to do is find something to do, like read a book or watch a movie. Or maybe you’ll just watch a book and read a movie instead.

What is the best alcohol to use in a Mexican Mocha?

While this recipe is an alcohol-free drink, you can add some spirits if you like after a long day in the freezing, biting wind. Or after a trying time sitting at your computer, wrestling with the blank page. It seems that using an ounce or two of blanco tequila would be a fine choice, considering that this is a Mexican Mocha. The grassy and earthy agave-forward taste will pair well with the spicy heat found in the cayenne, along with the bitterness in the coffee, and sweetness from the cocoa.

What glassware and garnish are used?

Grab your favorite hot beverage handled mug and pour your mocha in. Top with a healthy mountain of whipped cream, then sprinkle with a fair amount of fresh chocolate shavings on top of that for garnish.

What is the best coffee to use?

For this recipe, I used a strong and robust Café Bustelo, which is an espresso-style coffee. You can use whatever you prefer, but I’ve found a hearty and flavorful light or medium roast is the best choice for any cup of java.
