Thirst quenching with an extra boozy bite, the Beer Paloma is your new summer favorite.
Thank the universe for good friends. You don’t need many of them, in fact if you only have one consider yourself rich. What’s the line from the classic Jimmy Stewart movie, It’s A Wonderful Life? I’m paraphrasing a little, but it goes something like, “No one is a failure who has friends.”
And be thankful for friends who share, especially when the summer rolls around. Here in sunny Los Angeles, it can often feel like the warmer months never end, that we can all continue barbecuing and going to the beach well into January or February. Sometimes that’s true, and one of the reasons why I moved here. But the truth is it can get chilly and the weather does turn. We get excited for summertime just as much as anyone else in the world. So when those hot months arrive and you’re sweating so much you feel like you’re melting, a good friend with a pool who loves company is a gift.
A few days ago I was at my buddy’s house, doing a little writing before jumping in the cool waters of his backyard oasis. Everyone was there too, and the beer began to flow. I was in the mood for something a little different though, something a little more tart with an extra bite. I rifled through my friend’s home bar to see what jumped out at me.
There’s always tequila and beer at this relaxing abode, which got me thinking… if there’s grapefruit juice floating around and some limes and simple syrup… lucky for me there was. I first crafted a little Paloma for myself, mixing the tequila, limes, syrup, grapefruit juice and pouring that into a frosty pint glass. I then topped it off with a crisp and bubbly pale ale.
And voila! A Beer Paloma to quench the mightiest of thirsts. Everyone wanted to know what I was drinking, and soon they had one of their own. Next time you’re in the pool or just hanging out with your loved ones, give this simple and strong beverage a spin.
What is the Best Alcohol to Use in a Beer Paloma?
I used a clear and peppery silver tequila matched with a wheat pale ale. My Beer Paloma was smooth, bright and tart. I had to make sure I didn’t guzzle the whole thing in one or two sips it was so good. If you prefer a reposado tequila or have a favorite beer of your own, use what you like. Try this cocktail out with a few different types of alcohol and discover your style.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz of Tequila
- 0.5 oz of Lime Juice
- A pinch of Salt
- Grapefruit Soda
- 12 oz Light Beer lager type would work great
Instructions
- In a tall glass, preferably a pint glass, pour in your 1.5 oz of tequila. Follow this up with half an ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice. Throw in a pinch of salt to balance the citrus notes.
- Fill the glass up to the halfway mark with grapefruit soda. The grapefruit soda complements the tanginess of the lime while adding a slight sweetness and a bit of effervescence for a well-rounded flavor.
- Top off your glass with the light beer and garnish with a grapefruit wedge.
