Butterscotch schnapps and Irish cream create a delectable and decadent-tasting treat.

A Buttery Nipple probably makes one think of a Slippery Nipple. Technically speaking, if something is buttery it’s also slippery. But not everything that’s slippery is buttery. Anyway, since we’re talking about two separate shot recipes and not, uh, something else, let’s just get down to the brass tacks. The two drinks are similar, with both sharing provocative and saucy names that favor each other, suggesting they’re related or connected somehow. But both Nipples only have one ingredient in common, however, the Irish Cream liqueur.

Tonight’s cocktail, or shot, is going to be the Buttery Nipple. The Slippery shooter is comprised of sambuca, grenadine and Irish cream. The Buttery recipe is just as simple, using butterscotch schnapps and Irish cream liqueur. While their flavors are different, both Nipple shots are prepared and served layered. Our mixture is prepped by adding the schnapps to your shot glass first and then gently floating the Irish cream on top. When I made a few of these the other day, I was pretty happy with the way they turned out, looks-wise. Not quite sure if they look like nipples, or if that’s even what they’re supposed to resemble. The taste is amazing, with both the butterscotch and Irish cream melding together in such sweet harmony that you’ll want to keep having, and savoring, these shooters all night.

Have you ever visited Universal Studios and had the Butterbeer? Or a rich slice of butterscotch cream pie from House of Pies? Next time you’re in Los Angeles, hit that place up for a cup of joe and a slice of said pie. Quentin Tarantino wrote the script for Reservoir Dogs there, according to Hollywood legend. If you can’t make it out to the West Coast, but still have a hankering for a butterscotch-flavored libation, then you can slurp back a few Buttery Nipples, pop on K-Billy’s Super Sounds of the 70s and dream of those Hollywood nights.

A perfect treat for autumn and the spooky season, no matter where you are, the Buttery Nipple shot is a pretty light combo, regarding its alcohol content. Its flavor will keep you wanting more, so make sure these little magic potions don’t sneak up on you and knock you into the nearest cauldron.

What is the Best Alcohol to Use in a Buttery Nipple Shot?

You only need Irish cream liqueur and butterscotch schnapps to get some Buttery Nipples past your lips. For the Irish cream, Baileys is a popular, delicious and inexpensive option that will not let you down. Over the years, I discovered that butterscotch anything tends to be a little harder to come by, and in terms of the schnapps you’ll need, DeKuyper or Hiram Walker have been the easiest to find, and are pretty tasty as well.
