This layered, smooth and creamy shooter is the perfect way to get your next party started.

Whenever my friends and I get together for our Friday happy hour, shots are usually on the menu. I’ll have one from time to time, but if I’m being honest I’m usually not drinking to just get drunk. And I’ve always felt that the purpose of shots, or shooters, was to get inebriated as quickly as possible. It can be fun being a little tipsy, but if you’re not careful those shots you’ve been knocking back all night are gonna catch up with you. When they do, the floor will too.

Sometimes, though, certain specialty shots will be served and those tend to pique my interest. You can view them as “mini-cocktails” because they’ll often have two or three ingredients and a specific preparation that involves more than turning a bottle over. And when these shooters arrive at any party I’m at, I’ll get a devilish glint in my eye and inform my friends that I might be sleeping on their couch tonight. Just to be on the safe side.

One of these “mini-cocktails” is the Slippery Nipple, which is the recipe we’ll be making this evening. A popular drink with an uncertain origin, the Slippery Nipple is said to have been invented by a group of co-workers at the Australian Ski Rider Hotel in 1985. Guests staying at the Ski Rider would be introduced to the creamy and layered shot while hanging out at the bar no doubt. Going back to wherever their homes were in the world, they spread the word of the smooth shooter with a naughty name. Soon, Slippery Nipples were everywhere.

A simple combo of sambuca and Irish cream that, when prepared correctly, might resemble a specific part of the human anatomy… especially with the red grenadine at the bottom. The moniker more than likely came from the 1980s trend of naming drinks with saucy and suggestive titles… Sex on the Beach being one of the more famous.

If you’re the mischievous type and like watching your guests blush, offer them a few Slippery Nipples. If they’re not familiar with today’s recipe, it should be an interesting conversation.

What is the Best Alcohol to Use in a Slippery Nipple?

This little shooter packs a pretty decent punch, while sporting an eye-popping look. Along with the Irish cream, you’ll be using sambuca. This is an Italian liqueur, that bears an anise licorice-like flavor. I know some folks out there aren’t the biggest fans of licorice, but sambuca is surprisingly sweet and palatable, mixing nicely with the Irish cream and grenadine. If you’re still not convinced, there’s a variation of this shot made with butterscotch liqueur.

What glassware is used for a Slippery Nipple?

Shot glasses – I like to chill mine in the freezer for at least fifteen minutes before serving. You don’t have to, but it makes your drink extra cold and smooth.

Do I need to chill all the ingredients?

The separation and layered effect you’re going for will be more easily achieved with very cold ingredients. If you find yourself running out of space in your icebox, just chill the Irish cream, as that is the last and top layer added.

Similar Shots to the Slippery Nipple

We’re all adults here. Well, technically I’m an adult, but that doesn’t mean we can’t cut loose and get a little wild from time to time. Or at least, we can enjoy some specialty shots together at the next pool party without judgement. Even someone like myself, who’s not the biggest shot fan, will enjoy a few of them when the mood is right. It’s good for the soul to let it all hang out sometimes, and if you need a few more recipes to help with that, Twist & Toast has them.

  • B-52 Shot – This coffee, cream and orange flavored shooter is layered and served on fire. I wanna party with this one.
  • Cement Mixer – Dare your friends to knock back this intense and unsettling combination of Irish cream and lime juice.
  • Duck Fart – A funny name, but the combination of Kahlua, Irish cream and whiskey is mouth-watering.
  • Blowjob – If you love a dirty-sounding shot, this whipped cream topped mixture of Kahlua and Bailey’s will be sure to satisfy.
