Beat the heat with this fun and refreshing summertime treat, the Coke Slushie.

Today’s recipe brings me right back to the summers in between elementary school and those awkward teenage years before adulthood took over. It was a special time. We had video games at home like Nintendo, Sega, and Atari, but computers were still kind of new, and most of our time off was spent outside, carousing on bicycles, hitting up some midday movies, and cooling off at the arcade with a slushie or two.

Hopefully, all of you out there had similar summertime experiences, especially with said slushies. And if you’re unfamiliar, allow me to dream a little dream…

The sun is high, you’ve been out all day, and you’re more than just thirsty, you’re downright parched. So with the little pocket money you’ve made from doing chores around the house, you pedal over to the corner 7-Eleven, where a big, juicy hot dog awaits you, along with a giant Big Gulp-sized slushie to wash it down with. There are always a few flavors to choose from, like cherry or blue raspberry, but today you’re feeling a little fizzy.

So it’s the Coke slushie for you. And as you walk your bike home, sipping on the slightly bubbly and frozen treat as the sun begins to slowly sink in the distance, you don’t think twice about the moment. You’ll do it again tomorrow, and the next day too. Times like this will last forever, right?

What is the best alcohol to use to make a Coke slushie?

This drink is technically not a mocktail or “virgin”, alcohol-free concoction. It’s really only just Coke, frozen into cubes and then blended together into a slush-like consistency, hence it being called a Coke slushie. It’s a texture thing, along with it being super cold, and nothing else is added to it except for garnish. So, no booze at all is required to be put in.

What glassware and garnish are used?

Grab a tall highball or collins glass and pour your blended frozen Coke inside. Garnish with a cherry, add a squeeze of lime, pop a straw in, then start sipping.

What is the best dark cola to use?

This is a matter of preference, as a number of tasty options are available at your local grocery store. If you’re indecisive, nothing beats an old-fashioned can or glass bottle of classic Coca-Cola.

Other family-friendly drinks worth trying

Once the warmer months slowly begin to start their yearly visit, the kids might be yelling for something fun to sip on that’s a little more than just a traditional glass of lemonade. And while that’s always a perfect choice—in my opinion, anyway—below are a handful of alcohol-free and family-friendly mixtures that are as much fun to make as they are to drink.

  • Roy Rogers – An extra sweet and fizzy Coke concoction.
  • Shirley Temple – A lemon-lime soda version of the Roy Rogers, bearing another Hollywood legend as its namesake.
  • Arnold Palmer – Lemonade and iced tea come together in this thirst-quencher.
  • Disneyland Mint Julep – Make a pitcher of this to turn your backyard into the happiest place on Earth.
