Need a little treat to pick you up at the end of the day? The Snickers Shot really satisfies.

Halloween night had come and gone. Nobody’s house was egged, no trees or front yards were blanketed with rolls of toilet paper. It’s almost as if the polite quest for candy had completely usurped harmless civil disobedience. When we were younger, some kids used to run around with shaving cream and woe to those who got caught in the foamy crossfire. Suddenly, your friend, who left the house dressed as Superman, came home looking like Santa Claus.

The children had finished their annual tradition of asking for something good to eat, lest we grown-ups smell their feet. Always one to celebrate the virtues of tricks or treats, I turned to my friends and asked if we had any candy left. And there was nothing. Not a Kit-Kat, a Crunch, Zagnut, or even a Mounds could be found. And to everyone’s surprise, even the banana-flavored Laffy Taffy had been picked clean. There was one idea I had, however…

Taking some Irish cream, coffee liqueur and a bottle of Frangelico hazelnut that miraculously appeared in the cupboard, I was able to whip up tonight’s recipe, the Snickers Shot. While the candy bar itself always bragged about being packed with peanuts, the smooth shooters I doled out at the end of another spooky holiday certainly tasted as though they were as well.

Grown folks still love a treat now and then, especially on Halloween.

What Is The Best Alcohol To Use In A Snickers Shot?

You’ll need three equal parts of three different liqueurs to make your little liquid candy bar beverage. First, try out this recipe for homemade Coffee Liqueur to take care of that ingredient, then pick up a bottle of the legendary Frangelico for the hazelnut, and finally Baileys, Saint Brendan’s or—my new favorite—Five Farms for the Irish cream.

1 shot
5 minutes minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 ounce coffee liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce hazelnut liqueur like Frangelico
  • 1/2 ounce Irish cream

Instructions

  • Pour the coffee liqueur into the bottom of a chilled shot glass.
  • Place a clean barspoon upside down over the glass. Slowly pour the hazelnut liqueur over the back of the spoon to create a second layer.
  • Slowly pour the Irish cream over the spoon to form the top layer. Enjoy!

WHAT GLASSWARE IS USED?

Chill a number of shot glasses in your freezer for at least 15 to 30 minutes before serving. This will make your shooters extra cold and smooth.

WHY DO YOU POUR LIQUOR OVER THE BACK OF A SPOON?

This helps achieve the layers that this and other drinks often have in their presentation. Pouring a spirit over the back of a spoon helps the liquid fan out and gently sit atop whatever it is being poured on, instead of just splashing right in.

Other Shot Recipes Worth Trying

It is easy enough to just pour some tequila or whiskey into a shot glass and knock it back. Nothing wrong with that, either. But sometimes you’re feeling creative or fancy, and you want you and your friends to have a few special shooters to round out the evening. Here are a few little layered libations to keep the night going.

  • Hot Shot – When it’s cold outside, warm yourself up with this layered recipe.
  • Baby Guinness – Pour Irish cream atop coffee liqueur to make this cute mini mixture.
  • B-52 Shot – Creamy, layered and on fire. Literally.
  • Duck Fart – Whiskey is added to this sweet, smooth and funny-sounding shooter.
