The Gummy Bear Shot is a sweet and strong candy-flavored cocktail.
Anyone else here remember weekday afternoon cartoons? You’d come home from school, finish your homework (or just say that you did) and afterward you’d plop down in front of the T.V. with a snack and a juice box. And on that square screen you’d watch some of the best shows that, if you’re anything like me (and I definitely am), you still enjoy to this day.
For me, there was GI Joe, He-Man, Transformers, Popeye, Woody Woodpecker, Starblazers, The Real Ghostbusters, Super Friends, and a TON more… I’m not exactly here to talk about my animation obsession, but there’s a reason I bring this up. Especially in regards to tonight’s drink that we’ll be making, the Gummy Bear Shot.
The second I looked at the recipe and started grabbing some bottles off of the shelf at my home bar, the theme from The Gummi Bears popped into my head. I hadn’t thought of that particular afterschool show since I last saw an episode back in the late 1980s. The melody was stuck there in my brain noodles, but the only words that jumped out at me from my creaky memory were something about “gummi berry juice”. This was the red, magical potion the Gummi Bears drank that allowed them to have super bouncing powers.
Bouncy cartoon bears aside, I continued to hum the show’s catchy theme song as I whipped up a few Gummy Bear Shots for myself… and maybe enough for a fuller-sized cocktail, too. I topped them off with my favorite lemon-lime soda and relished the spiky, sweet taste as I knocked them back. The color wasn’t the bright red of the animated elixir, but it sure tasted like I always imagined it might.
And I did end up doing some bouncing around the room after a few more shots.
What is the Best Alcohol to Use for a Gummy Bear Shot?
The mixture of cherry flavored vodka and peach schnapps is, to my palate, where the candy-esque taste comes from in this sweet shot. Along with the tangy pineapple juice, you might be surprised how almost whimsical and innocent this mixture is as you drink it. It actually tastes like a red gummy bear! Until that satisfying boozy bite hits just as the sweetness does. Then it becomes a little more grown-up. Make sure you pick a good, top-shelf bottle of both the vodka and the schnapps. They don’t have to cost a lot, and the cheaper stuff will only reward you with a headache later on.

In the last few years, my dentist unfortunately informed me that I should probably stop eating candy. Especially if I’d like to keep my teeth. Since I’m all about my chompers sticking around for as long as possible, I’ve cut out the late-night Wonka-fests. No longer do I indulge in and enjoy favorites like SweeTARTS and Nerds and Runts and Bottlecaps and… well, you get the idea. But the upside is that I can still enjoy some candy-inspired libations from time to time, and satisfy my incredibly loud sweet tooth.
