Give yourself a sweet and spicy treat with the Mexican Candy Shot.
The dream was always the same… I was a contestant on Bozo the Clown’s Grand Prize Game, but in my dreams I wasn’t a kid. When I was in elementary school I’d religiously watch the Bozo show, fantasizing about getting a chance to go on the program and compete in the Grand Prize Game, lobbing little ping pong balls into buckets that got farther and farther away as you played. And with each ball you sank, you’d win a prize. I don’t have to tell you how badly I wanted to try and win the G.I. Joe U.S.S. Flagg aircraft carrier playset that nobody could afford or had room for.
But in my dream, I’m not a child pining for the holy grail of toys. Instead, I’m an adult being stared down by two surly clowns, neither of whom are Bozo or Cookie, and both look really, really annoyed. Instead of buckets, balls and prizes, I was behind a bar. Without pants on, too.
Fake Bozo leaned in, his words puffing out of his mouth and nostrils like the exhaling of an agitated horse. “You wanna win the game, chuckle face? I need my drink.”
Crusty Cookie wobbled over, backing up his not-so-funny friend. Both of them were sweating heavily, causing their greasepaint to run and smear. They were absolutely terrifying to look at. Crusty Cookie’s words warbled out of his mouth from the depths of his stomach. “Nobody’s getting any…” He began to lose consciousness, leaning over slightly as his eyes rolled back into his head. Fake Bozo punched him in the ribs, springing the other clown back to life, continuing his sentence. “Nobody’s getting any Skip-Bo until we get our candy shot.”
Fearful, confused and anxious over the threat of being Skip-Bo-less, I timidly asked what candy shot they wanted. This seemed to anger them even more. Fake Bozo was enraged. “You colossal goofus!”, he screamed, ripping large tufts of his red hair out of his head in frustration.
Crusty Cookie got in my face. “What’re you, asleep or something? I told you, a Mexican Candy shot, we want a whole row lined up so we can play our version of that Grand Prize whatever. This is how we always party in Tijuana, so make with the drinks!”
I was panicking. I had no clue what they were talking about, and knowing this was all a dream didn’t help. Fake Bozo came back, impatiently grabbing nearby bottles of what looked like tequila and watermelon schnapps. I couldn’t make out the labels, and the words made no sense.
The clowns stole my thunder, mixing up a bunch of these pink-colored Mexican Candy Shots, sucking on lime wedges after knocking back each one. Crusty Cookie smiled at me, pulling out a red clown nose and slowly coming my way with it. “You know what’d look good on your face”, he asked.
“That?” I pointed at the red nose. Suddenly, Fake Bozo grabbed the back of my head and slammed it into the surface of the bar. The clowns cackled.
“No,” Fake Bozo screamed. “THAT!”
I awakened with a start, sitting bolt upright in my bed. My face was killing me. In my head I could still hear those maniacal harlequins laughing at my pain. I grabbed my phone, googling the Mexican Candy Shot to see if it actually existed. To my surprise and curiosity, I discovered that it did.
Thankfully, those clowns from my dreams don’t.
What is the Best Alcohol to Use in a Mexican Candy Shot?
You can go with any style of tequila for this recipe, depending on your taste preference. I myself like a peppery and smooth blanco tequila, a clear spirit. When mixed with the watermelon schnapps, it gives the shot an inviting light reddish hue, and a flavor that’s a mix of sweet and spicy.
