Have a light and bubbly reward after a long day with the Red Wine Spritzer.

‘Twas a lazy Sunday. The weather had warmed up here in the City of Angels and the heavy rains from a few short weeks ago became a distant memory. Despite being the month of January, the vibes and feel of summer were in the air. But hey, it’s Southern California, that happens all year round.
After working a little handyman business in Burbank with my buddy, I made the long journey through Glendale and back into Los Feliz (I avoid freeways when I can) to wrestle with the blank page. As any writer out there knows, some days are better than others. And this day was a struggle. Every word came out like molasses. Every feeling was blocked and every turn of phrase felt forced and somewhat silly. How can one be entertaining when the creative part of the brain is being squeezed by the general stress of “what the heck do I write about?”
But eventually the words arrive, because sometimes you have to literally will them into existence just to get through your work and meet deadlines. And on those days, when all is said and done, and everything is handed in, an adult beverage is quite satisfying. And during the week, something light, but still with bite, is what I prefer. Like tonight’s recipe, the Red Wine Spritzer.
What is the best wine to use in a Red Wine Spritzer?
Our recipe calls for a medium- to light-bodied red wine to mix with. Some of the finer options include merlot, pinot noir, grenache and cabernet franc. There are more wines that fit the bill, and most will have subtle fruity flavors with a velvety texture, along with a dry finish that will mix well with a bubbly and crisp club soda.

Ingredients
- 3 ounces red wine medium- to light-bodied preferred
- 3 ounces club soda or sparkling water
- A slice of orange or a lemon twist to garnish
Instructions
- Fill a large wine glass with plenty of ice.

- Pour the red wine over the ice. Top with an equal amount of club soda or sparkling water.

- Give it a gentle stir to combine and add the orange slice or lemon twist. Serve immediately.

What glassware and garnish are used?
Fill a wine glass with some ice and stir your Spritzer gently within. Garnish with a lemon twist or orange wedge on the rim.
What is the best club soda to use?
I’m a big fan of Fever-Tree mixers, especially their club soda. Bubbly, sharp, and crisp on every sip while also being soft and smooth, Fever-Tree club soda fast became my regular mixer whenever it is called for. It costs a little more than most brands, but once you try some, you’ll see why.
