Mix yourself a refreshing and tart Rum and Lemonade the next time you’re poolside.

The general rule of thumb when you’re mixing any kind of cocktail for yourself is that lemons work best with gin and whiskey, while limes go nicely with rum. These aren’t hard rules by the way, and we all know that the best things in life often come about by breaking a few, so tonight’s drink is a good one to look at in that regard.

The Rum and Lemonade is a simple, two-ingredient beverage that will look perfect in your hand as you stroll along the beach or lounge by the pool. The tropically tinged spirit goes hand-in-hand with citrus, usually limes, and the combo is featured in countless mixed drinks. But today we’ll be taking sweet and tart thirst-quenching lemonade and mixing our precious Caribbean liquor with it. What might seem like an unconventional pairing is actually quite popular, with many variations on it served in bars all over.

Since the summer is upon us, especially here in Southern California, now is the perfect time to grab your favorite bottle of rum and some freshly squeezed lemonade, lounge under the biggest beach umbrella you can find and start sipping. A little Harry Belafonte or Desmond Dekker to accompany you is optional, but highly recommended.

What Is The Best Rum To Use In A Rum And Lemonade?

While there are a plethora of rums to choose from, not just styles but brands as well, to make this cocktail a crisp and refreshing one, a clear and unaged rum is a balanced choice. A lemon-infused rum is also recommended, and for a more robust sip, a spiced or dark variety is something to consider.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?

You can use either a rocks glass or a highball glass, filled with ice and garnished with a juicy lemon wedge. Squeeze that lemon too, for an extra zip of citrus.

SHAKEN OR STIRRED?

Either method works for this cocktail. Shaking will give the mixture a frothy texture and add some tiny ice chips as well, which some folks like in their drinks.

Similar Drinks To The Rum and Lemonade

The summertime is upon us, and we’re all getting thirsty. One of the best indulgences we can treat ourselves to is an ice-cold lemonade. And that particular beverage also mixes well with a number of spirits and alcoholic beverages. Here’s a handful of thirst-quenching recipes from Twist & Toast that’ll keep you cool in the heat.
