Light, fizzy and with a refreshing, sharp finish, the Electric Lemonade is a bright blue beverage that’s a fun way to spend a hot afternoon.

Sneaking around these creaky old docks in the middle of the night probably wasn’t a great idea. A good one, possibly, but great? Nope. But it had to be done, for a deadline was given. And it was my neck on the chopping block.

An Electric Lemonade was the request. My mission, which I chose to accept, was to deliver the most memorable and electrifying Electric Lemonade that human lips would ever come in contact with. A tall order. But as I myself am somewhat tall, I felt confident that my quest would be successful.

The recipe was simple enough: vodka, blue curaçao, sweet and sour mix, all combined over ice and topped with a sparkling, crisp 7UP. I could’ve used Sprite, or even that new Starry stuff that I see everywhere. But I hear someone mention 7UP, and I’m right back in grade school, playing “Heads Up, Seven Up”. How’d you win at that game anyway? I don’t remember. The point is, they’re all good. But 7UP has some memories attached with it, and now I’m getting all misty-eyed…

Shaking thoughts of soda away for the moment, I went back to snooping around this sparsely populated section of the marina, searching for that extra special ingredient that will give my Electric Lemonade a real buzz. Yes, I was searching for a certain warehouse that dealt in exotic and dangerous marine life. I didn’t require a Carcharodon carcharias, as my car couldn’t fit an aquarium big enough in the back seat. No, I was here to procure an electric eel, in the hopes that one of those notorious denizens of the deep will add that special something no other cocktail could claim.

Then I had a thought, as though something akin to plain homespun sense had welcomed itself back into my cranial noodle. If I use an electric eel to zap every drink I make with a blast of legitimate electricity, would that be considered unsafe? Would the glasses explode? Would each sip make the fillings in my teeth hurt? Would they explode, too? Would I end up electrocuting myself and my friends? Do electric eels even produce bolts of electricity, or was that just a myth, and if so why didn’t I Google that before I came out here?

Thirty minutes later, after talking to a very curious law enforcement officer about electric eels and Electric Lemonades—and convincing them I wasn’t inebriated—I found myself back in my hotel room. And looking up where to purchase those cool novelty ice cubes that flash different colored lights. That might be a better option to make my next Electric Lemonade a little something extra, instead of positively shocking.

What Is The Best Vodka To Use In An Electric Lemonade?

You can opt for either an unflavored vodka, which will meld nicely with the sweet and sour flavors from the other ingredients, or you can use a citron vodka to give your drink more flavor with extra notes of citrus. When choosing the curaçao for your cocktail, make sure you get the blue variety, as this will add the royal, fun and vibrant color this beverage is known for.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH IS USED?

Fill a tall collins glass with fresh and clear ice cubes, all the way to the top. Once your cocktail is poured and ready to sip on, garnish the rim with a lemon wheel.

CAN YOU USE CLUB SODA INSTEAD OF LEMON-LIME?

If you want to cut the calories, as well as the sweetness, you can top this mixture off with club soda instead of Sprite or 7UP.

Similar Drinks To The Electric Lemonade

Lemons and liquor seem to be a match made in cocktail heaven. Soul mates, if you will. An Electric Lemonade is simple and brilliant all at once. And it’s not the only lemonade on the block that has that little something extra in it. It’s raining as I write this, but once the sun comes out and the weather gets nice again, I’ll be making a few of these delicious treats and sipping on them in the hammock.

  • Pink Lemonade Vodka – Pink and punchy, this sweet and tart cocktail will be a huge hit at your next party.
  • Shandy Beer – Lemonade and beer combine to make one of the most refreshing beverages you’ll ever have.
  • Lynchburg Lemonade – Jack Daniel’s and lemon-lime soda come together in this classic favorite.
  • Tequila and Lemonade – Crisp, earthy and sweet, this is another great drink for a hot day.
