Looking for a strong and invigorating beachside tipple? Take the Rum and Orange Juice cocktail for a spin.

The kelp forest gave the blue waters around me an emerald atmosphere. I was almost at around twenty fathoms deep, speargun in hand in case any barracuda decided to surprise me with an invitation to lunch. I kept kicking my fins, pushing myself down toward the sandy bottom. The occasional seahorse would swim alongside me, keeping me company as I continued my trek through the beautiful and big briny.
Leaving the tall, swaying towers of green kelp behind me, I emerged into the open water. A shadow passed over, blotting out the sunlight breaking through the surface of the water. I looked up, gulping at the vast emptiness that surrounded me. This is why I always keep my focus on the sea floor. The ocean is a terrifying place, especially when it’s on top of you. And sometimes, it is made all the more frightening when a massive great white shark is gliding above you. I kept low, trying to breathe easy, hoping the bubbles from my regulator didn’t attract the big guy’s attention.
I looked at my Seamaster, and noticed the minute hand reaching the dot on its bezel, which helped me keep an eye on my oxygen. It was time to start my ascent, while under the ever-watchful black eyes of the shark. My boat was back on the other end of the kelp forest, so I decided to just head for land. I kept the beast to my left, as I slowly and calmly made for the shore that was on my right. Soon enough, I was trudging up onto the beach, my boat anchored some distance away toward the horizon.
I’d need a dinghy to get back out there, but first… It’s time for a cocktail. The bar near the beach was inviting, and I couldn’t resist treating myself to a cold and strong beverage before heading back to my vessel. I trudged over in my scuba gear, politely asking the barkeep to mix me up a Rum and Orange Juice. The citrus burst of orange and lime juices exploded over my taste buds, invigorating my senses, while the spiced bite of the rum soothed my jangled nerves.
As I sipped and planned on how I’d be getting back to my vessel, I saw a fin poke through the surface of the ocean. If I couldn’t get a dinghy, it was going to be a rough swim…
What Is The Best Rum To Use In A Rum And Orange Juice?
There are a few dark rums that I like when making myself tropically leaning beverages. Years ago, I discovered Kraken, a spiced black rum that not only tasted and mixed great, but also had a cool label and was pretty inexpensive. Appleton Estate is another fine spirit, and as such, will give your drink that special “funky” finish that Jamaican rums are known for. If you’d like a lighter-tasting concoction, use a white rum instead, like a Bacardi Silver.
