Simple refreshment is only a sip or two away when you have a Rum And Sprite.

For the past few days, I’ve been living vicariously through my younger brother. And not because he’s more youthful or in better shape—I’m pretty happy with the way I turned out—but more because he’s currently vacationing in GoldenEye, Jamaica. And for a colossal and life-long James Bond fan such as myself, visiting the birthplace of 007 is beyond a dream. To snorkel and swim in the same waters that Ian Fleming did while writing every original Bond adventure… Well, I’m beyond excited that he is having that experience.

Just today, for example, he texts me that while he’s sitting at the bar looking out over the Caribbean, Chris Blackwell himself comes walking up and introduces himself, and his companion, a tall and striking Jamaican woman.

“This is Grace,” he simply says, while Grace runs off for a moment to snap a picture of the sunset. It took my brother a moment to realize the woman was none other than the legendary Grace Jones herself. The resort isn’t crowded. In fact, my brother even mentioned that he had only seen one other guest while there, so the two icons joined him in a few beverages.

He didn’t mention what they were drinking, but as he told me about it, I ran to my home bar in the kitchen, feeling thirsty and needing to toast this awesome moment my brother is having. Something tropical, especially. But right now, after Thanksgiving, my shelf was a tad bare.

Except for a bottle of rum, thankfully. And with some Sprite chilling in the fridge, the choice was obvious. It is also tonight’s drink. A simple, easy, and satisfying tipple, the Rum and Sprite can quickly whisk you away—or at least your imagination—to the sandy, idyllic shores of the Caribbean.

What is the best rum to use in a Rum And Sprite?

With this mixture, you can choose your preferred style of rum, depending on how robust you want your drink to be. For a balanced flavor, an unaged white rum, with its clear color and light, earthy taste, will meld wonderfully with the citrus effervescence of the lemon-lime soda. If you’re into a more complex and richer experience, you can use an aged rum, like a spiced, gold, or dark style. Or for a more tropical vibe, mix this concoction with a coconut-infused spirit.

What glassware and garnish are used?

Fill a highball or collins glass with ice, gently stir your rum and Sprite within, then squeeze a lime wedge over it and pop it in for garnish.

Do you have to use Sprite as the soda?

You can use any lemon-lime soda of your choice, like 7UP or Starry. Technically, though, a Sprite is the “Sprite” part in a Rum and Sprite.

Similar drinks to the Rum And Sprite

Sometimes, all you need to successfully craft a citrusy and strong libation is a spirit and a soft drink, a lemon-lime flavored one specifically. If the Rum and Sprite satisfied your cravings and quenched your thirst without much fuss, you’ll be happy to hear about a number of other mixed drinks that are just as easy and fast to whip up.

  • Tequila and Sprite – Have a bubbly, agave-forward and earthy treat with this concoction.
  • Texas Lemonade – Vodka, lemon and lime juice, and a soda like 7UP or Sprite craft this refreshing tipple.
  • Blue Motorcycle Drink – Have a little of everything, topped with some lemon-lime soda.
  • Kansas City Ice Water – Lemon-lime soda helps keep this gin-and-vodka cocktail crisp and cool.
