Lift your spirits and get festive with this cinnamony, creamy, delightful Spiked Eggnog. ‘Tis the season!
For me, spiked eggnog goes as far back as my earliest Christmases. Clearly, I was not partaking, but the aunts and uncles enjoyed Pa’s homemade eggnog with eggs, cream, nutmeg, and probably fifty percent whiskey or rum. I’ve since found out that spiked eggnog is way older than my grandpa and dates back to the 18th century in the New World (and perhaps even earlier in the UK). The exact origins are debatable, but the fact that eggnog is a creamy cocktail enjoyed at Christmas time holds true.
Traditional spiked eggnog was easy to throw together with a number of common ingredients, making it the perfect, easy treat for visitors during the holiday season. Luckily, you can now buy a bottle of eggnog (with or without alcohol) at your neighborhood grocery or wine and liquor store; making this holiday tradition even more convenient than it was in the past. Our spiked eggnog uses just four ingredients and is ready faster than you can say ‘Jingle All The Way!’
Just thinking of eggnog, I can almost taste it and immediately get that warm Christmas feeling. On a list of things that give me that festive vibe, sipping spiked eggnog is up there with wrapping presents, watching Home Alone, and admiring twinkling lights everywhere.
Do We Spike Eggnog with Rum, Whiskey, Brandy, or Vodka?
Should I be proud or embarrassed to say that I have enjoyed spiked eggnog with all of these liquors? Anyway, this recipe calls for spiced rum, which I prefer with my Christmas drink, but eggnog can be mixed with any of these liquors. The spiced rum goes perfectly with the already present hints of spice in the eggnog mix. Whiskey, specifically a bourbon, is second most likely and while many folks say brandy, the spirit is not nearly as common these days. Most of us are familiar with vodka and likely have a bottle in our home bar. Vodka is not traditionally included in spiked eggnog, but it has been done and it is not bad! There are not many drinks where the liquor is interchangeable like it is in spiked eggnog, it is pretty phenomenal. So, work with what you have and enjoy!
What is the Best Alcohol to Use to Make a Spiked Eggnog?
I make my spiked eggnog with spiced rum, specifically Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum. You can also try Kraken (such a cool bottle), Goslings Black Seal Rum, or Mount Gay Eclipse. These are all in the same price range.
