A traditional Caribbean cocktail, the Ti’ Punch is a fun and potent way to spend a hot summer evening.

The name of tonight’s cocktail, Ti’ Punch, is Creole for “small punch”. It originated and continues to thrive in popularity among the French-speaking islands of the Caribbean. And one of the fun traditions that comes with mixing this tipple for you and your friends is that each person is responsible for mixing their own drink. The saying that goes with the Ti’ Punch is this:

Chacun prépare sa propre mort…

Which means “each prepares their own death”. The bottle of spirits, limes and other ingredients, including the glassware and garnish and everything needed to mix it all up, is laid out before the drinker. They make their own Ti’ Punch, which ultimately tastes the way they want it to.

While the presence of the lime and sugar might remind one of the Daiquiri or the Caipirinha, it is the use of rhum agricole that gives this exotic elixir its unique identity.

What is rhum agricole?

While rum is produced using molasses as the base, rhum agricole—or “agricultural rum”—is made from sugarcane juice. This gives the spirit an earthy and grassy flavor, often described as “funky”. Rhum agricole is from the French Caribbean, and in Martinique holds a protected designation of origin. A number of brands export it to your nearest store, including a few Hawaiian varieties, as they can also produce rhum from sugarcane juice.

Instructions

  • Pour the rhum agricole and sugar cane syrup into a chilled rocks glass.

What glassware and garnish are used?

You’ll need a perfectly round and freshly cut lime wheel, a chilled rocks or Old-Fashioned glass to imbibe out of, a cocktail cube and a swizzle stick or bar spoon to mix it all up with.

What is a good substitute for rhum agricole?

While nothing will ever replace rhum agricole, a potent and funky rum that can be used in its stead is an overproof Navy or Jamaican rum, like Wray & Nephew or Smith & Cross.
