Dive into a tasty tipple or two this weekend with the Tipsy Mermaid cocktail.

About ten years ago, when I first moved to Los Angeles, I was taken around to quite a few interesting places. I used to have a real Hollywood manager, getting me in the rooms and introducing me to all the wrong people. And some of those folks would take me around town, visiting movie sets, going to meetings and winding up at various house parties. At first, one would have thought they “made it” being shown places and experiences like that. But, as the saying goes, time makes fools of us all.
One early afternoon, I found myself being driven way out from where I lived in Burbank to the rolling hills and cliffside shores of Malibu. And at the biggest and most opulent house I’ve still been in, a little shindig was being held. For no other reason than to have one, it seemed. The homeowner’s son was holding court and tending bar, while a DJ spun some genuinely chill lo-fi sounds. This was on a weekday too, and while not a wild get-together, there were still a fair number of people there, drinking and existing with an almost envious aloofness. Especially the mermaid.
Yes, this party had a random mermaid. A young lady was lounging on the diving board of the pool, catching some rays and wearing a sparkly fishtail, which covered the lower half of her body. As she sipped on a cocktail, swaying her tail lazily from side to side, I was handed a drink of my own. Upon the first sip, I immediately tasted sweetness, mixed with tangy and tart, with the tropical bite of rum on the finish. I asked the stranger who served me what it was, and the young lady on the diving board answered instead.
“It’s a Tipsy Me-“
She never got to finish her words, as she accidentally fell into the water with a splash.
What is the best alcohol to use in a Tipsy Mermaid Cocktail?
Most of the flavor in this libation will come from the sweet melon notes found in the Midori liqueur, as well as the tangy and satisfyingly tart pineapple juice. A white rum is the best spirit base for this mixture, as its subtle, earthy and tropically-tinged taste will neither overwhelm nor disappear in your cocktail, resulting in a beautiful and balanced sipper.

Ingredients
- 1 ounce Midori melon liqueur
- 1 ounce white rum
- 2 ounces pineapple juice
- 1 ounce blue curaçao
- Lime wheel, maraschino cherry, and a cocktail umbrella for garnish
Instructions
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and add the Midori, white rum, and pineapple juice. Shake well for about 10–15 seconds until the mixture is well chilled.

- Strain into a highball or hurricane glass filled with fresh ice. Slowly pour the blue curaçao over the back of a spoon into the glass. The heavier liqueur will sink to the bottom, creating a teal-to-blue gradient.

- Garnish with a lime wheel, a maraschino cherry and a cocktail umbrella.

What glassware and garnish are used?
Fill a tall highball glass with ice, and once your drink is ready to imbibe, garnish the rim with a lime wheel and a maraschino cherry, as well as a cocktail umbrella for a little tiki-like flair.
Is this a tiki drink?
While it doesn’t have any one mixologist or bartender associated with its creation, the Tipsy Mermaid can be considered a tiki cocktail due to the presence of rum, citrus, and its evocative, nautical name.
