When Friday afternoon rolls around, it’s time to enjoy a Whiskey Tonic or two.

I often feel like a sippin’ scientist when I try out a cocktail I’ve never had before, especially whilst researching one of my pieces here at Twist & Toast. It’s always an adventure, and you know I love an exciting, and tasty, excursion into the unknown.
Now, we’re in the month of May, and it is the year 2025. Anybody with eyes has seen all of those jaw-dropping Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning trailers, since the movie will be coming out in just a few weeks. And the hype is real. I love seeing the snippets of Tom Cruise diving into the ocean or hanging off the wing of a plane. And as someone who’s had that experience, albeit not to that intensity, seeing those clips makes me want a drink.
And tonight’s cocktail might be a daring new venture for some folks, only much safer than those taken on by the IMF. Most folks are familiar with the crisp and refreshing charms of a Vodka or Gin & Tonic, but have you ever crossed the bubbly soda-like mixer with some whiskey? Follow our recipe and recommendations and try a few tonight.
And don’t worry. The fate of the world isn’t in your hands. Only a Whiskey Tonic.
What Is The Best Whiskey To Use In A Whiskey Tonic?
Whatever your favorite or preferred whiskey is, that’s the best one to put in a Whiskey Tonic. I like mine with a spicy and smooth rye whiskey, and tried a few with Bulleit before switching over to a classic Jack Daniel’s. I think an American brand whiskey, with its edge and warmth on the finish, melds nicely with the bitter notes of the quinine found in the tonic.

Ingredients
- 2 ounces whiskey
- 4 ounces tonic water
- 1 lemon wedge for garnish
Instructions
- Fill a highball glass with ice. Pour the whiskey over the ice.

- Add the tonic water and stir gently to combine the flavors.

- Squeeze the juice from a lemon wedge over the drink, drop the wedge into the glass before serving.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?
Fill a highball glass with ice and mix your drink within, stirring gently. Squeeze a lemon wedge into it and pop it on top for garnish.
WHAT IS THE BEST TONIC WATER TO MIX WITH?
There are plenty of brands out there that make a lovely tonic, but I always use Fever-Tree, not just because they truly do make the best mixers, but they also offer a light tonic that contains only 70 calories per serving.
