Have a tart and warming tipple with the Apple Cider And Whiskey cocktail.

It was so gradual this year, the weather change, that I almost didn’t notice it. Until today. The chilly sting from the morning wind, combined with an early sunset, helped give away that the summer was indeed over, and frost would soon be covering our once green and lush front lawn. My short sleeves and linen pants no longer gave a cooling comfort, but instead did nothing to thwart the brisk sting that was now in the air.

There was only one thing to be done… I must venture into the attic and find that overly large and comfy sweater I’ve had since my college days. The blanket with sleeves, as it was sometimes referred to by my family and friends. They could call it Ruettiger for all I cared, this sweater is perfect and warm and feels like a giant fuzzy hug every second that I wear it. And once my breath starts becoming visible in the cool fall and winter air, this knitted jersey is also comfortable armor.

But that sweater isn’t the only thing that keeps the cold at bay. Tonight’s cocktail is a fantastic companion to whatever Snuggie, pullover or jumper that you pull out when the temperature drops and the forecast calls for icy conditions. The Apple Cider And Whiskey is exactly that, a tart and sharp apple cider coupled with a smooth, spiced and warming whiskey. The trees in your front yard may be barren, their leaves blanketing the ground around them, and the sky may look more overcast now, but with an Apple Cider And Whiskey to sip on, wrapped in your favorite oversized outerwear, these can be things to look forward to.

What is the best whiskey to use in an Apple Cider And Whiskey?

A rye whiskey is what I would recommend when mixing with apple cider. Of course, if you have a favorite dram that you swear by, then by all means mix this cocktail up with that as its base. But I find the robust and rich spiciness from a nice rye whiskey, like High West or Bulleit, gives your libation a high-quality sip that has a smooth, yet slightly rough-hewn edge to the experience. For a slightly sweeter and smokier taste, use some bourbon in place of the rye.

What is the best apple cider to use?

For this cocktail, you’ll want a balanced blend of sweetness, acidity and spice, so seek out a cider that will complement your choice of whiskey. If you’re looking for a more widely available brand, try Trader Joe’s or the Ohio Cider Company’s products.
