Need a morning pick-me-up with a Southwestern vibe? Have a Bloody Maria at your next brunch.

So right off the bat, you might be asking yourself what the differences are between a Bloody Mary and today’s cocktail, the Bloody Maria. Apart from one being named Mary and the other being called Maria, the base spirits are also different, for a start. The classic Bloody Mary is mixed with vodka, while the recipe we’re looking at, the Bloody Maria, uses tequila as its foundation.

This concoction has no specific origin or creator attached to it. This isn’t out of the ordinary, as you know. The most likely scenario was that a few bartenders, unbeknownst to each other, had the idea to swap out the vodka in the Mary for tequila. The earthy, grassy and peppery flavor of the Mexican alcohol pairs beautifully with the robust flavors that are present due to the Worcestershire, hot sauce and tomato juice. Nothing clashes here. With each savory sip, you’ll notice every ingredient swims together like synchronized Olympians.

The next time you’re on vacation and find yourself having a rough morning, and you’re moving slow and feeling a little sluggish, treat yourself to a Bloody Maria. Spicy and refreshing, this boisterous and brawny beverage will help clear the cobwebs you’ve got in your head, as well as give you some much-needed get-up-and-go.

What Is The Best Tequila To Use In A Bloody Maria?

Our recipe below suggests using a tequila blanco, or a silver or white variety of the spirit. This will be an unaged version, and features earthy, grassy and peppery notes amongst its clear and smooth texture. If you want your Bloody Maria to be even more full-bodied and intense tasting, you can opt for a darker, aged reposado tequila, which will be tinged with hints of smoke, vanilla and caramel.

DO COCKTAILS LIKE THIS REALLY CURE A HANGOVER?

Okay, here’s the deal: while a Bloody Mary or Bloody Maria might offer some fast and temporary relief from the aches and pains of drinking too much the night before, it will not cure you. And drinking more booze to try and help the way you feel isn’t the healthiest thing, either.
