Enjoy an alcohol-free and tropical treat while lounging by the pool with the sweet and tangy Blue Lagoon Mocktail.

About two summers ago, after I started writing for this site, I was at my parents’ home back on the East Coast, spending a nice chunk of my summer with my family. Barbecues, swimming, fireflies, board games, video games, and general loafing/laziness were had, along with some nice time spent writing each day. Idyllic, really. It’s one of the reasons I look forward to going back every year.

The summer before last, my oldest nephew started to ask about my cocktail writing and came to the conclusion that I must be an alcoholic because of it. He was eight years old at the time, and also said—to my face—that “James Bond is for old people”, so I can’t really hold that against him. Especially considering that now, aged ten, he’s fairly interested in the globetrotting exploits of 007. And mixed drinks.

The kid will look at us grown-ups, making concoctions like a Dark And Stormy or Tom Collins, then he’ll go off and whip up something for himself, albeit child-friendly. At first, I got a little bent out of shape—I don’t want him even pretending to imbibe booze—but then I quickly realized he wasn’t interested in liquor, but instead wanted to be a part of what we were doing. So he grabbed himself some ginger beer and lime juice and made himself what he called “Just A Stormy”. It was cute until all the ginger beer disappeared and the adults had nothing left.

Tonight’s recipe is a “mocktail” that will probably make my nephew happy: the Blue Lagoon Mocktail. A tart, tangy, and sweet azure elixir comprised of non-alcoholic blue curaçao syrup, lemon juice, and lemon-lime soda, this family-friendly take on the original Blue Lagoon cocktail will quench your thirst with a citrusy, effervescent bite.

What is the best alcohol to use in a Blue Lagoon Mocktail?

Since this is a mocktail, or “mock cocktail”, we’ll be using no boozy elements whatsoever in our recipe. The star ingredient here is a non-alcoholic blue curaçao syrup. Brands like Monin and Torani produce this, are easy enough to find, and provide your drink with that signature bitter orange flavor and sapphire color. Combined with some freshly squeezed lemon juice and topped off with your favorite lemon-lime soda, like Sprite or 7UP, the Blue Lagoon Mocktail might end up becoming a new summertime tradition for you and your loved ones, no matter their age.

What glassware and garnish are used?

Pour your ingredients into a frosty and tall highball glass filled with fresh ice, stir gently, then garnish the rim with a lemon wheel and pop a bright red cherry on top as well.

What alcohol is used in a classic Blue Lagoon cocktail?

You’d think some white rum is the spirit base in the tropical-looking libation, but a clear and crisp vodka is what’s traditionally used instead.

Other mocktails worth trying

If you’re looking for some lighter, booze-free fare, then you’ve come to the right place. Twist & Toast offers up some of the finest cocktail recipes you can think of, but for those interested in looking for alternatives to the many stronger libations here, the site has its share of spiritless sippers too. Try a few of these out and see for yourself.

  • Sleepy Girl Mocktail – A viral sensation, and a delicious one as well.
  • Roy Rogers – Dark cola and grenadine combine in this extra-sweet and bubbly beverage.
  • Arnold Palmer – Iced tea and lemonade are waiting for you after a long day of golfing.
  • Disneyland Mint Julep – Serve your family this kid-friendly refresher from the Happiest Place on Earth.
