Relive those memorable summer days with a Bomb Pop Shot or two.

Some might say tonight’s recipe, the Bomb Pop Shot, unlocks fun and pleasant childhood memories of being at the grocery store and running to the freezer section to grab a box of your favorite summertime treat, the red, white and blue popsicles known as Bomb Pops. Shaped like a classic-looking rocket, these sweet and sour goodies were always best after some frolicking in the pool, or even walking down the sidewalk after grabbing one from the neighborhood ice cream truck.

The Bomb Pop Shot resembles the freezer pop that inspired it. With some grenadine, hard lemonade, and blue curaçao layered atop one another, this shooter is sure to bring back just about every moment you’ve ever had with the sticky, cold and sugary delicacy.

For me, though, those memories are always recent. Whenever the summer months roll around, I always make sure the freezer is stuffed to the gills with boxes of ice cream. It can get kind of hot here in Los Angeles, even during other seasons, so it’s nice to have these frozen indulgences on hand. And I also like the idea of knowing I can mix up some boozy versions of these confections, like an Orange Creamsicle, Dreamsicle and of course, the Bomb Pop Shot.

What Is The Best Alcohol To Use In A Bomb Pop Shot?

After you’ve readied your grenadine for the red layer of this shooter, you’ll need the blue and the white to complete your Bomb Pop. For the sapphire-colored section, that old cocktail stalwart, blue curaçao, brings a wonderfully bitter, citrus bite to the proceedings. Try one from Bols or DeKuyper. And when paired with a spiky hard lemonade, like from a bottle of Smirnoff or Mike’s, you have a shot that fondly reminds you of those delicious childhood treats.

FAQs & Tips

WHAT GLASSWARE IS USED?

Take some tall shot glasses for you and your friends, chill them in the freezer for about 30 minutes, then prep your shooters in each one when you’re ready.

CAN YOU STORE THE BOMB POP SHOT?

No. You’ll need to layer each shot to make them a Bomb Pop, so make and serve these right away.

HOW MANY CALORIES ARE IN A BOMB POP SHOT?

Each shooter will be about 81 calories, so be wary when knocking these back.

CAN THIS BE MADE WITH VODKA?

Yes. You can replace the hard lemonade with a citron or lemon-infused vodka, making for a slightly stronger shot.
