The trendy Carajillo Cocktail will give you that get-up-and-go with this authentic espresso and liquor combo.

The origins of the Carajillo cocktail are debatable. Some claim Spanish soldiers in Cuba, mixed espresso with rum for coraje or “courage” back when Cuba was a Spanish colony. In contrast, others claim the Carajillo originated as a daytime drink in Spain to throw back in the morning, or before returning to work. Originally, it was served hot and enjoyed quickly. Recently, the Carajillo has evolved into an iced version and gained popularity in Mexico and other Latin American countries, where Licor 43 is often the spirit of choice. Whichever way you make it, this drink is small but mighty, packs a punch, and requires just two ingredients.
Coffee and espresso cocktails are certainly having a moment. For example, the Espresso Martini is one of the most popular drinks today and is not going away anytime soon. However, the Carajillo might be sharing (or stealing) the spotlight and is on trend to be the next most popular espresso cocktail. These espresso-based drinks are a tasty and fun substitute for dessert with plenty of options. In the mood for tequila? Go for the Espresso Margarita. Something sweeter? Try the Baileys Espresso Martini.
Some Like It Hot (Or Layered)
Our Carajillo cocktail is shaken and served over ice as a refreshing cocktail. It can also be served cold and layered. To layer a Carajillo, pour your Licor 43 over ice, then using the back of a spoon, slowly pour the espresso over it, similar to how Guinness is poured over a Black and Tan. To enjoy the beverage hot, skip the ice and pour your liquor into a fresh shot of espresso and give it a quick stir. I find this is a cozy, light drink to have after a holiday meal or to close out a winter party.
What is the Best Alcohol to Use to Make a Carajillo?
We use the sweet and spicy Spanish liqueur Licor 43 in our Carajillo. Licor 43 is made with 43 unique ingredients that give it an unparalleled flavor. It tastes like vanilla, with hints of allspice, citrus, and floral notes. This liqueur blends nicely with the espresso, regardless of whether it is shaken with ice or served warm. However, if you do not have Licor 43 or prefer something else, there are substitutes. As noted, Carajillo was originally served with rum. Try a spiced rum in this cocktail, such as Captain Morgan or Kraken Black.
