If you need to get the party started right—and quickly—just hand out a few Cherry Bomb Shots.

Cherry Bomb Shot

I’m not the biggest connoisseur of shots. Unless the spirit that’s being slammed is top-shelf, and even if it is, I prefer my liquor mixed into a cocktail. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. If the music is thumping and I’m in the right mood, my friends could easily convince me to take a shot of something. But by and large, because I want to take the time to appreciate the taste of the alcohol, shots aren’t regularly on my menu.

Which brings me to vodka and the drink we’ll be making tonight… the Cherry Bomb Shot. This is definitely more of a “party” beverage, as the mixing together of a caffeinated energy drink that you lob a shot of vodka into doesn’t seem appropriate for a relaxing evening. The last time I had one of these (and I do mean one), it involved fully clothed volleyball in the swimming pool and Motorhead blasting at an insane volume. I even think the neighbor’s lawn died as a result. A successful evening, to be sure.

The Cherry Bomb Shot is an eye-opening potion. Cherry-flavored vodka, in a shot glass, is dropped into a half-filled pint glass of your preferred carbonated energy beverage. As you drink it, the ingredients coalesce. This is the kind of tipple that gets you going fast. If the energy drink is a little too potent for you, you can always use a cherry-flavored or lemon-lime soda.

If you want to feel alert while getting tipsy, the Cherry Bomb Shot might just be the treat you’re looking for.

What is the Best Vodka to Use in a Cherry Bomb Shot?

If you’re drinking something called the Cherry Bomb Shot, you’re probably expecting something cherry flavored. Our recipe calls for a shot of cherry-flavored vodka. If this sounds too sweet for you—some flavored spirits can lean heavily that way—you can always go for an unflavored version and add a few dashes of grenadine for the red color. And depending on what flavor energy drink you choose, an unflavored alcohol might mix better.

What glassware is used for a Cherry Bomb Shot?

To properly enjoy a Cherry Bomb, you’ll need a chilled pint glass for your energy drink and a chilled shot glass for the vodka. Pop these in your freezer for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Can you use another spirit in place of the vodka?

Yes. If you’re not a fan of vodka you can make your Cherry Bomb Shot using cherry-flavored schnapps.
