Sip on life in the fast lane with the sleek and powerful-tasting Ferrari Shot.

So, why exactly is tonight’s recipe, the Ferrari Shot, named as such?

I did a little digging and it appears that, like many a cocktail or mixed drink, the Ferrari Shot doesn’t have a cut-and-dried or recorded history. Once again, us armchair drink-archaeologists are presented with no real answers as we wonder, “Where did this concoction come from?”

One of the more popular and common-sensical theories is that this shot mixes two very famous and iconic Italian liqueurs together, Fernet-Branca and Campari. Almost anyone with some experience sipping on adult beverages has probably had a pleasant run-in or two with both. For me, I was introduced to Campari via the classic Negroni cocktail. And as far as the Fernet is concerned, a shot of it is often referred to as a “bartender’s handshake”, while in Argentina, it is very popular when mixed with Coca-Cola, and called a Fernet Con Coca.

Two Italian icons coming together to create a shot named for another Italian icon… Makes perfect sense to me.

What is the best alcohol to use in a Ferrari Shot?

There are only two spirits you’ll need to make and enjoy the Ferrari Shot… A deep red and bitter Campari, and the sweet, herbaceous and menthol-like Fernet-Branca. This will make your liquor shopping relatively easy, as all you need to do is ask for these products by name when you hit your local liquor store.

What glassware is used?

All you need to enjoy a Ferrari Shot or two is a standard shot glass. Pop it in your freezer for up to 30 minutes before making and pouring this recipe.

Shaken or stirred?

Our instructions say to stir, which will give the resulting mixture a smooth and silky texture. Shaking will froth your shooter up a little, as well as make the liquid cloudy. If you use this method, make sure to double-strain as you pour.
