A refreshing cocktail comprised of a crisp, dry, juniper-forward gin and a spicy, full-bodied ginger beer.

When you hear the word “mule” in regards to an alcoholic beverage, your brain probably automatically conjures up images of a sweaty, ice-filled copper mug filled with vodka, lime juice and ginger beer, along with a few sprigs of fresh mint peeking out over the rim. Your brain is very smart, and probably telling you that you’re feeling a little thirsty, too. The Moscow Mule is an iconic and refreshing cocktail that was born in the 1940s. 

When an adult beverage like the Moscow Mule has been around, and as popular, for as long as it has, other recipes inspired by it, or variations on the original, are bound to pop up. That’s the case with tonight’s drink, the Gin Mule. And like its name suggests, this elixir is made with a crisp and juniper-infused London Dry gin. And if you’re well-acquainted with the original Moscow Mule, know that this off-shoot is just as simple and easy to craft. It’s also just as refreshing and tasty. 

The Gin Mule, or Gin-Gin Mule as it’s sometimes called, is a contemporary classic. Invented by Audrey Saunders at New York City’s Pegu Club in 2000, it was originally crafted to entice vodka drinkers into the world of gin. Becoming quite popular, this cocktail helped elevate gin back to a place of prominence in the modern spirit community, as well as becoming an icon of the Big Apple’s cocktail renaissance of the early 21st century. 

If you’re in the mood for something floral, herbal and minty, look no further than tonight’s recipe, the Gin Mule.

What Is The Best Gin To Use In A Gin Mule?

There were two types of gin that I tried when I made myself a few Gin Mules. Both are highly recommended and offer different experiences. A high-quality juniper-forward London Dry gin, like Bombay Sapphire, will be a fantastic complement to the spiced and robust flavors of the ginger beer. For a lighter-tasting tipple, use a cucumber and rose-infused gin, such as Hendrick’s.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces gin
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 4 ounces ginger beer
  • Mint sprig for garnish, optional
  • Lime wedge for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Fill a copper mug or rocks glass with ice cubes.
  • Pour the gin and fresh lime juice over the ice.
  • Top off the mug with ginger beer.
  • Gently stir the drink to combine all ingredients.
  • Garnish with a mint sprig and lime wedge if desired. Enjoy your Gin Mule.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?

A copper or sterling silver Mule mug will keep your cocktail cold with every sip. If you can’t get your hands on one, an Old Fashioned or rocks glass will do just fine. Garnish with a lime wedge and a fresh sprig of mint.

IS THIS COCKTAIL KNOWN BY OTHER NAMES?

Yes, the Gin Mule is also known as a Foghorn cocktail, a British Mule, or a London Mule, with the latter two names coming from the use of London dry gin.

Mules pack quite the kick. In fact, that’s where they get their name, because they kick like a… well, you know. So if a drink that’s got a bit of a wallop appeals to you, you’ll be pleased to know about the other varieties of this dram that are available.
