Before you and your fellow college students break for the summer, celebrate the year’s end with a potent bowl of Hunch Punch.

Tonight’s recipe has no clear origin or history, with nothing written in stone or scribed in the back of a random liberal arts textbook to commemorate its arrival. And yet somebody has to be responsible for the Hunch Punch’s birth. The word that’s tossed around the campfire is that this is a college campus concoction. One look at the ingredients will have you stating “no duh, professor” in response.

Like something out of a house party from a 1980s R-rated comedy, the Hunch Punch is a large batch beverage, ladled out of a punch bowl and passed around to everyone in the room with the sole purpose of having everyone drunkenly belting out “Louie Louie” by The Kingsmen toward the night’s end. Either that, or it’ll help encourage starting a sonic battle with the upstairs R.A. after deciding that playing AC/DC’s live version of “Thunderstruck” from Donington is THE best idea on the planet. At that moment, anyway.

And even though each scenario ends in a lot of yelling, with the phrase “it’s three in the morning” being repeated quite often in an effort to have the volume lowered, the Hunch Punch somehow makes it all okay. And sort of fun. Until the cops arrive. And then you remembered what your mother always said:

“It’s all fun and games until somebody calls the police.”

What Is The Best Alcohol To Use In A Hunch Punch?

This bowl of boozy juice packs quite the wallop, and that would be due to an inspired combination of white rum, vodka and a clear-colored grain spirit. Now, the rum and vodka should be easy enough for you to choose, since you probably have a favorite that you like, or a brand in mind already. But if you’re unsure of what grain alcohol to pick up, look for Buffalo Trace White Dog Mash, Spirytus, or the old campus stalwart Everclear. These are very high-proof liquors, so just know your Hunch Punch will definitely sock it to you and your friends.

What glassware and garnish are used?

If you don’t have a punchbowl set, which includes a ladle and cute little cups, then what are you waiting for? Once your guests arrive, ready to drink, a large and aesthetically pleasing bowl to serve your Hunch Punch out of will be the center of attention, especially with a plethora of lemon, lime and pineapple slices added for garnish.

Can the hunch punch be carbonated?

Yes. If you’d like a fizzy take on this crowd-pleasing Punch, you can top it off with your preferred lemon-lime soda or ginger ale.

Hunch Punch Variations Worth Trying

Now that the summer season has officially arrived, you might be knee deep in party planning, wondering what you’ll serve to your multitude of guests who help dirty your pool filter. Fear not. You can always hire a catering company, complete with private bartenders, but that can get a little pricey. For a more economical alternative, check out some of these big bowl concoctions.

  • Halloween Punch – If you’re searching for something spooky to serve, look no further.
  • Margarita Pitcher – No bowls required for this large batch and popular beverage.
  • Jungle Juice – Serve your guests this fruity, fizzy and tropically-tinged tipple.
  • Party Punch – When planning a party, one must include the blueprints for some Party Punch.
