Have a creamy, refreshing and warm treat on a cold day with the Peppermint Schnapps Hot Chocolate.

In the very first apartment I lived in, right after graduating college, a bunch of my fellow classmates came over for a little housewarming to celebrate my roommates and my new domicile. It was only the first summer of the new millennium in New York City, and all of us were in a partying mood. Instead of whiskey or rum or even vodka, the alcohol we settled on as a group was a bottle of neon-looking Avalanche Blue peppermint schnapps.

At first, we were having a wonderful time, laughing and passing the bottle around, remarking on the crystals that sat at the bottom of it. After some time, however, my head started to throb, and suddenly the sweet and cool minty flavor from the Avalanche started to backfire on me. Some of my friends began to call it an early night too, after they also began to not feel so great. It turns out that drinking peppermint schnapps on its own—on an empty stomach to boot—isn’t the best of ideas.

So tonight’s recipe is, in my opinion, probably one of the best places you can use that style of alcohol, the Peppermint Schnapps Hot Chocolate. Smooth, rich and steaming, this strong, refreshing and relaxing libation is the perfect companion on a cold, blustery day. Adding a minty and fresh-tasting element to this hot and chocolaty concoction is a much more ideal way to enjoy it than guzzling it on its own.

What is the best schnapps to use in a Peppermint Schnapps Hot Chocolate?

When I crafted a few of today’s cocktail for myself I decided on grabbing something different… Memories of that Avalanche headache I got all those years ago still haunt me. I found that Hiram Walker offers a lovely sweet, minty and balanced libation that blended nicely into my hot chocolate mixture. There are other brands, like DeKuyper and Spaulding, so you can choose what you prefer when the time comes.

What glassware and garnish are used?

A coffee or heat-resistant glass mug is a fine and sensible choice for this drink. Once it’s poured, top with a healthy dollop of whipped cream and crushed candy cane pieces.

Can this be served as a chilled beverage?

If hot coffee can be served as iced, so can hot chocolate. Once your beverage is prepared, store the mixture in a covered container in your fridge for up to a few hours. Pour over ice in a tall glass and garnish as usual. Pop in a straw or two and start sipping. The mixture will be a little thick, so drinking this concoction hot is still the preferred way.
