Have a tropically-tinged and spiced tipple with the Rum and Ginger Ale.

I used to think ginger ale was a New York thing, like how you only get certain kinds of flavors of something in various parts of the country or world. Growing up an Army Brat, we moved around a lot, and much soda pop was had. But whenever we visited family in the Big Apple, ginger ale flowed like water. After a number of years, I figured out that it was a common carbonated beverage, found just about anywhere, as well as being a favorite mixer for alcoholic spirits.
And when you think of ginger ale being paired with some liquor, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Whiskey? Bourbon? The spiced infusions and ingredients found in both those drams and ginger ale make a great team, and a crisp, clean vodka makes for a refreshing libation, too. But what about rum?
Tonight’s recipe is a simple one: the Rum and Ginger Ale. Taking the full-bodied fizz of the non-alcoholic drink and swirling some rum into it results in a thirst-quenching and cooling sipper. Effervescent and effortless, if you have any rum and ginger ale on hand, now is the best time to grab a glass and some ice.
What is the best rum to use in a Rum and Ginger Ale?
Here’s where I had some fun with this recipe. I’m currently visiting my family on the East Coast. While looking over this recipe, I saw that we recommend a white rum, which is clear, unaged and light in taste. A great mixer in many cocktails, and a fine option for this one. So I made my first Rum and Ginger Ale with some Bacardi Silver, and was quite happy with it, too. But curiosity got the better of me, and I just had to try one with some dark, spiced and strong Kraken rum. A richer experience, to be sure, with more flavors rolling around together. Both are refreshing, with one being light and bright, and the other more complex.

Ingredients

- 4 ounces ginger ale

Instructions

What glassware and garnish are used?
Fill a highball glass with ice, stir your mixture in and garnish with a fresh and juicy lime wedge.
What is the best ginger ale to mix with?
This is all a matter of opinion. A Schweppes, Seagram’s, or Canada Dry ginger ale are easy to find and always do nicely in any cocktail. Every brand has a slightly different recipe, so experiment a little and try others to see what you feel tastes the best. I like Fever-Tree (surprise!).
