Treat yourself to the candy-flavored Salted Nut Roll Shot the next time you’re in the mood for a little snack.

I love nuts. Almonds, salted peanuts, pistachios. When I worked early mornings at a movie poster company in Burbank, my breakfast consisted of a cappuccino from the break room, a sugar-free orange Monster (I know, I know), and the main course, a jumbo PayDay candy bar. The combination of caramel and nougat that kept an amazing amount of peanuts together got my motor running for the long and arduous days that were ahead of me. Not the healthiest meal, I’ll admit. But it also wasn’t the worst either. And it turns out, confections like that had their origins in the 1930s during the Great Depression as a filling and cheap alternative to a full meal. My girlfriend is horribly allergic to peanuts, so I unfortunately don’t get to indulge in the joys of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I literally have to fly across the country to do that, and I have.
Which brings to me to tonight’s recipe, the Salted Nut Roll Shot. A sweet and savory mixture, this boozy little treat brings together the creamy flavors of butterscotch schnapps and RumChata. And with some caramel sauce and salt on the rim, along with a healthy sprinkling of chopped peanuts, the Salted Nut Roll Shot not only satisfies any craving you could possibly be in the mood for, but it also harkens back nicely to the candy that inspired it.
What Is RumChata?
Inspired by the flavors of horchata, a sweetened and milky beverage popular in Mexico, RumChata is a rum-based creamy liqueur. Easy to find at your local liquor store, this spirit is filled with flavors like coconut, cinnamon, vanilla and other spices, along with the tropical notes of Caribbean rum, adding the perfect bite.
What Is The Best Schnapps To Use In A Salted Nut Roll Shot?
Let’s say you have a few other flavors of schnapps at your home bar, but are now in the market for some butterscotch. You won’t need to look far, as the brands you’re already using will have what you need. DeKuyper, Mr. Boston, Hiram Walker and Mr. Stacks all produce fantastic options whenever you’re on the hunt for almost any kinds of schnapps.

WHAT GLASSWARE AND GARNISH ARE USED?
You’ll need some regular and simple shot glasses to serve this recipe in. The garnish that’s needed helps to make the drink what it is. Line the rim with caramel and salt, then top the shot with crushed peanuts, like the kind you’d use on an ice cream sundae.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE A PEANUT ALLERGY?
You can still enjoy the actual shot, which is just butterscotch schnapps and RumChata, and still garnish it with salt and caramel, just omit the crushed peanuts entirely.
