Fly through the cosmos with the robust magic that is the Surfer on Acid Shot.

Growing up a big nerd makes my mind automatically rush to certain images and experiences whenever I hear or see certain names of the drinks that I write about here at Twist & Toast. Today’s shot is no different. When you see a drink called something like the Surfer on Acid Shot, what comes to your mind? Do you have images of a psychedelic and out-of-their-mind surfer dude, shooting a multi-colored tsunami? Or does your brain work like mine?

I see what tonight’s recipe is called and I run over to my bookshelf, pulling off all of my Silver Surfer comic book collections. Once the herald of the planet-eating Galactus, the once brilliant scientist Norrin Radd now flies through the universe, witnessing sights no human eye will ever see on his galactic surfboard, charged by the god-like Power Cosmic. Trippy, philosophical and always wild and entertaining, the Silver Surfer’s adventures in Marvel Comics took many an imaginative geek, like me, on exciting journeys through outer space.

While the titular chrome-looking Surfer wasn’t tripping on acid, the shot we’re making tonight pretends that it is. Created in Southern California in the 1990s by bartender Eric Tecosky, the Surfer on Acid shot came about after its inventor was playing around with Jägermeister, pairing the liqueur with different ingredients. The mixture of Jägermeister and coconut rum began to take off, with its robust and Tiki-tinged flavor becoming popular along the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

And the best part? No planet-eating cosmic entities should disturb your sipping.

What Is The Best Rum To Use In A Surfer On Acid Shot?

Along with the use of Jägermeister in this shot, an herbal German liqueur comprised of over 56 ingredients, we’ll need a tropically-tinged coconut rum to mix with it. Malibu, with its white bottle and sunset seen on many a bartender’s shelf, is the more popular and accessible choice, and will do nicely. Bacardi, Captain Morgan and Parrot Bay also all produce fine, coconut-flavored spirits.

WHAT GLASSWARE IS USED?

For a smooth and extra-cold Surfer, chill some shot glasses in your freezer for at least 30 minutes before mixing and pouring.

CAN YOU USE ANOTHER FRUIT JUICE INSTEAD OF PINEAPPLE?

If you like. Try sticking with an orange, lemon or lime juice to complement the coconut rum.
