Plunge some potency directly into your taste buds with the fun and eye-popping Syringe Jell-O Shots.

Whenever Halloween rolls around, I absolutely have to pop on my favorite horror films. And I’m not talking about nasty, gory stuff, which of course has its fans and charms. But I’m talking about stone-cold classics that get you every time, the movies that you get a real kick out of showing to your friends… Universal classics like The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Invisible Man, or Bride of Frankenstein, cult favorites like Evil Dead II and Phantasm, or really scary stuff like Alien, the list is almost endless. And of course, Halloween, from the maestro himself, John Carpenter.

But tonight’s unique presentation of the party-favorite Jell-O Shots has reminded me of another must-watch horror, the blood-splattered and darkly humorous take on an H.P. Lovecraft short story, The Re-Animator. I was around 8 or 9 years old when this movie hit the midnight theaters while we lived with our grandparents in Queens, New York. What sticks out to me the most is the image of a mad, crazed scientist in a lab coat holding a syringe filled with a glowing green liquid on all the posters, trailers and ads. It left quite an impression.

So when you throw your next Halloween soirée and costume party, filled with all manner of fun and spooky-themed cocktails for your friends to enjoy, make sure you have some Syringe Jell-O Shots ready to pass around. And play The Re-Animator on your television in the background. I guarantee those who have never seen it will never forget the night, and your Syringe Jell-O Shots.

Or they might never come back to visit. The movie’s pretty gross.

What is the best alcohol to use in Syringe Jell-O Shots?

You’ll want a clear and crisp, clean-tasting spirit to make your mixture with, as whatever you decide on will meld and assimilate nicely with the flavor of the gelatin. Vodka, white rum, or tequila will be the best choices, as something like gin tends to be herbaceous and flavor-forward already. In this recipe, you want the Jell-O to shine, while having a slightly hidden boozy bite.

10 syringes
3 hours hours 15 minutes minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 ounces Jell-O powder any flavor
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 3/4 cup vodka, white rum, or tequila
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 10 food-safe syringes

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, empty the Jell-O powder and carefully pour the boiling water on top. Whisk until gelatin granules are completely dissolved.
  • Top with your chosen alcohol and cold water. Stir well to combine.
  • Pour the Jell-O mixture from the bowl into a tall glass (this makes it much easier to suck the liquid into the syringes). Place the tip of a syringe just under the surface of the liquid and slowly pull the plunger back to suck the mixture. Leave a small amount of space at the top.
  • As you fill each syringe, immediately place it into a tall glass with the open tip pointing straight up. Repeat for the other syringes.
  • Once all your syringes are filled and standing vertically in tall glasses, carefully move the glasses to a fridge and chill for at least 3 hours until the Jell-O sets.
  • Keep the syringes cold until serving. To take the shot, point the tip into your mouth and push the plunger!

What glassware and garnish are used?

Part of the appeal of this type of shot is that it’s exactly that… A shot. But disguised as and pretending to be a medical one. That’s part of why these are great at Halloween, as all those sexy nurses and mad scientists can walk around your party handing them out. You can purchase these in bulk, just make sure they’re sterile and only used for entertainment purposes.

What is the best flavor of Jell-O to use?

Whatever you like best is the way to go, or perhaps a variety of different flavors if you have the space and time to prep. If you want to go with a Re-Animator-like vibe, some bright-looking lime- or lemon-flavored Jell-O is the way to go.

Other Jell-O Shots Worth Trying

Tom Lehrer is a legend, not just as a satirist, humorist, and musician, but also as the genius who gave society the modern Jell-O Shot. Whenever you craft or give anyone any kind of boozy Jell-O snack, you have Mr. Lehrer to thank for that. Sadly, he recently passed away at the age of 97 years old. So every time a jiggly, potent sipper passes your lips, give ol’ Tom a thought and raise your gelatin in his honor.

  • Lemon Drop Jell-O Shots – These colorful and citrus-shaped shots will bring any party up a few notches.
  • Halloween Jell-O Shots – Here’s another spooky treat for the Halloween holiday.
  • Champagne Jell-O Shots – Have a fancy and sparkling shot of wiggly goodness with this recipe.
  • Margarita Jell-O Shots – Turn the summertime favorite into a tray full of tequila-infused Jell-O shooters.
