Create your own creamy, Caribbean liqueur at home with this delicious RumChata recipe.

Despite its popularity, I really had no experience or knowledge of tonight’s recipe: the creamy, sweet, and rum-based RumChata liqueur. Until today, that is. One of the joys of writing for Twist & Toast is the number of times I’ve sat back while working, remarking to myself, “Wow, I never knew that.” And these revelations don’t always have to be mind-blowing to satisfy. Sometimes the simplest new nugget of knowledge can be very rewarding.
I can think of all the countless times I’ve walked into a grocery store and down the liquor aisle, and have passed by the distinct bottle of RumChata, wondering to myself what it is before I get distracted by something else. Occasionally, I’ll think that I need to pick up a bottle and give it a try, or I’ll write about a drink that uses it in its mixture. For whatever reason, I didn’t allow myself an opportunity to sample any.
But with the recipe below, that all changes. Easy to mix and drink, this homemade concoction brings together a milky and rich blend of spices and rum that offers a Caribbean-inspired treat that can be sipped on its own or be featured in any number of cocktails.
So stop wondering and start mixing.
What is the best alcohol to use to make RumChata?
You’ll want to go with a dark, spiced rum when crafting a batch of homemade RumChata. The aged, robust, and full-bodied spices in the spirit will join harmoniously with the cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla flavors found in the other ingredients. The result is delicious and memorable, with a smooth, familiar-tasting finish whenever you sip on it.

Ingredients
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup simple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup dark rum
Instructions
- In a blender or a large pitcher, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, simple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. You can blend on low for 20 seconds to ensure even mixing.

- Add the rum and pour the mixture into a clean glass bottle or mason jar with a tight-fitting lid. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

- Shake well before every pour as the spices will settle at the bottom.

What is RumChata?
Originating from Wisconsin, RumChata is an inspired liqueur that was purposefully designed to taste like a combination of rum and horchata, which is also where its name comes from.
