Little, creamy and strong, the Baby Guinness Shot has fully grown flavor.
Ever looked at a drink and thought, “I wish this was tiny?” It’s probably a rare occurrence amongst folks who enjoy a tipple from time to time, but it does happen. My own experience proves it. After a long day of work, it’s good to relax and knock back a few bottles of suds to take the ol’ edge off. But once I hit my limit and still have a bit of a thirst, a full beer looks a little too hefty. Sometimes I’ll wish it was smaller, just big enough to hit that last dry spot in my throat, but small enough so I don’t have to have a friend drive me home. It is a weekday, after all.
Tonight’s drink solves that problem, especially for fans of tall, cold and creamy pints of Guinness. The famed and legendary Irish beer isn’t exactly light. I once heard the draught referred to as “a sandwich in a glass.” In college, a friend bet that I couldn’t chug one. Moments later, I was twenty bucks richer. It wasn’t easy, because a pint of Guinness is best when sipped, not guzzled. Alas, that money has long been spent.
The Baby Guinness Shot is a visual “Mini-Me” when compared to a classic pint of the beer. Dark as night with an inviting white foam top, looking at both the stout and the shot will make the thirstiest of mouths water. But the smaller shooter has its own flavor. Pouring coffee liqueur to start and layering a sweet Irish cream on top gives this drink sweet and strong notes, guaranteed to perk you up. It might not taste exactly like a Guinness, but it makes for a fantastic companion to one.
This little libation has a cute history, too. Around the 1980s/90s in Dublin, Ireland, there was a pub called Waxies Dargle, where the Baby Guinness Shot originated. Two factors contributed to the tasty shooter’s creation; Waxies would brew its own homemade coffee liqueur and also happened to do business next door to the Rotunda Maternity Hospital. They started giving out Baby Guinness Shots to expectant parents, a tradition that continues in many pubs across Ireland to this day.
And for all you Swifties out there, Taylor’s bae Travis Kelce has recently declared the Baby Guinness Shot as his favorite shooter after having a few in Ireland on the Eras Tour.
What is the Best Alcohol to Use in a Baby Guinness Shot?
This recipe is a simple, two-ingredient affair. Choosing the alcohol you’ll make this shot with shouldn’t be difficult either. The Baby Guinness consists of coffee liqueur and Irish cream liqueur. If you’re feeling nervous about picking the right bottles up, have no fear. Whenever I go to get some of these at my grocery or liquor store, the selection isn’t exactly mind-blowing. Select the most popular brands and you’ll be just fine.
Ingredients
- 1.5 ounces coffee liqueur
- 0.5 ounce Irish cream liqueur
Instructions
- Pour the coffee liqueur into a shot glass, filling it about three-fourths of the way.
- Hold a teaspoon above the shot glass at an angle, and slowly pour the Irish cream liqueur over the back of the spoon. This will create a distinct layer of Irish cream floating on top of the coffee liqueur.

FAQs & Tips
You’ll need a standard-sized shot glass. If you want a colder Baby Guinness, you can chill your glassware in the freezer for at least fifteen to twenty minutes before.
Part of the experience of this recipe is the layered effect. If you just added the two ingredients together and saved it for later, that aspect will be lost. It’s recommended to make this drink, then serve and enjoy right away.
It may be tiny, but each Baby Guinness Shot is around 183 calories.
As the Irish cream is carefully and slowly poured over the back of your spoon, it’ll fan out over the top of the coffee liqueur. This will create a layered effect, which wouldn’t happen if you just dumped one ingredient into another with a simple pour.
